Awwww.... Are we all still defending the helpless multinational corporation from the terrible injustices that are being inflicted on it by the tyrannical workforce?
Eh. Our pay and benefits (which mind you, other non-union companies get) make up for their horseshit. The problem in question is that the company has offered nothing in return for it's demands (in regards to the prior contract), which doesn't matter to the crowd here because unionized labor is "evil". Though I have to say, I do respect UA. I figure he's about the only one of you who'd stick to his principles.
The union should take control of the company as far as I'm concerned. You shouldn't be grovelling for them to give you some returns for their "demands" at a time when they're making record profits.
And it's not that I don't disagree with them, it's that I don't care. Does that make me evil? Probably. But at least I own up to it.
Yeah the Unions are great for the industry. Wait . . . for a second I forgot that unions are a haven for lazy asses, crooks, corruption, and shoddy workmanship. Witness GM's wonderful products.
Why don't corporations deserve to be protected against authoritarians who want to do nothing but strip them of all profits and wealth in order to support the poor?
Because corporations don't deserve rights. We've been through that before of course, so I suggest you do a search on one of the innumerable threads I've discussed it in. I don't intend to derail this one.
Do scabs deserve rights? Or do they deserve to be physically barred from working and possibly beaten or even killed?
Obviously the Supreme court disagrees with you and have decided that they deserve to be treated as individuals. The case was determined in 1886 in the Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company.
They're legally protected actually (you know, being people and all), in places where they can be hired. Legally, there's nothing we can even do. The picket itself is symbolism.
The picket itself is intimidation, pure and simple. Don't play coy with me, my little auto worktress.
Most of us aren't criticising Chris for being part of a union, but rather as Asynch put it apparently being a self entitled thug.
You clearly disagree with it, buy why exactly is it heinous? A corporation without rights can't be expected to survive. You can't have a worker's paradise if there's no place to work.
A corporation ought to have priviledges when society decides that they should, which it can use to "survive". And there are - or could be - other places to work as well. Heinous because rights ought to belong only to actual individual people.
I guess you haven't seen a picket line recently... its basically a bunch of dudes standing/sitting around and people giving short honks as they drive by. Oh and a hooker or two usually drops by the line. Not intimidating or charged or anything, its pretty damn sedated.
Here is the thing though. If a corporation has no valid legal standing then it is really just the property of the people that own it (the shareholders) If that is the case then that plant is the property of private owners and under their individual legal rights it is wrong to steal it away from them.
And their self interest is to work and that is justification enough for them to cross your picket line
