Source I remember hearing about this case in one of my classes and the lengths to which people will go to obey authority figures without question, but that still doesn't mean McDonald's is responsible for the stupidity on display here. The truly unbelievable part of this case is not that someone impersonating a police officer was able to get an employee to do all this shit over the phone, but that it was this girl's fiance that willingly did all this. There are crucial aspects of this story missing (was this woman forceably restrained?), but I still don't see how McD's should be held responsible for actions taken by grown adults. Plus, the way this girl is smiling, I think the "gold digger" comment certainly applies...
If it took that long, did they need a Sherpa? What the hell could they have been doing for three hours?
You really think that should have been in the policy and procedure manual? Jesus, I think most people are stupid mongoloids stumbling through life, but I give 'em a little credit.
You can find the video on youtube, it's the 20/20 report(or one of those news shows from the big 3) on the story. I don't have a problem with this ruling. She was 16 and scared, she just did what she was told and the McD's manager kept walking in and out of the office while it was going on.
if there is a pattern of robberies the least they can do is issue an alert. In this case they could have informed all managers about this scam. We get all kinds of warning in the bank about all kinds of things. If there is a bum outside that is too aggressive we get a warning. Fughedaboudit!!
The warning thing isn't the main problem, this girl was stripped searched by a McDonalds manager, and then by the manager's fiance. After he stripped searched her, he made her get on all 4's and he spanked her and then told her to give him a blowjob or they would have her arrested(which she did). Yes, she was stupid... however that doesn't make this alright. A 16 year old girl shouldn't be subjected to this by her manager or anyone else at her place of employment.
I'm glad I got over fear of being arrested by the age of 13. Some people really freak out if they are threatened with arrest. Sometimes I watch TV shows and laugh at how a cop says 'you'll go to jail for 20 years.' The cop has a very small part in any trail against a person. They certainly don't control the outcome.
$6.5 million is peanuts to McDonalds...they probably make that much money globally every 10 minutes or something. If McD's was responsible for what their employees did, or their property, I dunno...but for a 16yo to be put through this...wow...if *I* owned the franchise, this wouldn't have gone to court...I'd have settled out of court right away, probably for a lot more than 6.5 mil...
Actually the best thing to do is never have ya ass arrested. Do the right thing and avoid cops. That's what I tell all the young guys and gals. Someone shoulda told me when I was like 12.
I'm confused. Was it the girl's ex fiance that groped her or was it the store manager's ex fiance? Either way, why would he be conducting a strip search? Were they both in on it with the caller, or was the caller just doing it for kicks and the perps decided to take full advantage of it?
$6.5 Million is just an outright assinine figure for a jury to come back with. Give the girl $100,000 and send her on her way. She's a gold digger. They should have poured hot coffee on her ass.
I agree. I just avoid cops. I really wouldn't bother calling them for help in most cases (like say if I was robbed for an amount of less than $500 or so). I just don't want to deal with them. And of course that's assuming I don't see the guy who robbed me just standing around waiting to get caught. I'd call it in if it was cut and dry like that, but nothing that required their assistance because they tend to be worthless if they have to investigate anything.
It was the manager's fiance and they weren't in on it, they fell for it(the caller was a random guy who apparently got off on stuff like that) and the fiance took advantage of it. He turned himself in later that day because a friend convinced him he couldn't get away with it and they would go easier on him if he just came out with it.
All the report is used for is statistics. Like as if they are gonna go and find YOUR mugger. I made some reports in the past. Its always been a waste. But it good to let them know if your house or apartment is robbed in case there is some kind of pattern. But stollen shit from your car...fughedaboudit!!!
It's news to me that a company shouldn't be liable if one of its managers strip-searches and otherwise abuses an employee.
She was a minor who was stripped, imprisoned (as in "imprisonment", the legal term) threatened and sexually molested. $6.5 is peanuts.
From my class, it is a lesson in the dangers of obeying authority figures w/o question. No one was "in on it", except for the caller. He was apparently so convincing on the phone that he got these people to do this w/o them wondering why a cop would be asking them to do all this stuff.
Bullshit! She's a gold digger and her lawyer should be horsewhipped. Give her a smaller settlement and fire the manager. That's all that was needed out of this case. The girl did not deserve 6.5 mil.....no one does!
If an authority figure (a cop) is telling them to do this? *Yes, he wasn't a real cop, but the point still stands
I think the purpose is to make them feel it. So mega companies get hit large. $100,000??? Man, Ronald has that in his pocket at any given time. Ya gotta make a dent so that they understand.
You or anybody for that matter, is not an agent of the police unless deputized for such action. The cops did not directly take this action.
