Well, this is what happens when you start to think in absolutes. I think you are right that we should be wary of the tendencies within Islam towards Islamic fundamentalism and those Muslims who support that. We've had Christian fundies trying and failing for years to make the Bible (or their interpretation of it) law here for decades. This is, at least on a cultural level, a Christian country. And yet, abortion is legal as is gay marriage. If ever such letters made their way through our postal system, most of us would laugh--then go get armed, legally or otherwise. Mostly true - the Texas "draw mohammed" came to an end quickly because a "good guy with a gun" was a great shot. And if the cops hadn't taken out the Pasadena cops with a quickness, they would have taken many more lives. Now those cops could have been armed with a nightstick and a notebook, but I'm guessing that was not their weapon of choice. That said this couple were smart enough to choose a"soft target" within the "hard target" of the US in general. Yes, the "good guys with guns" were law enforcement/security but a gun is a gun is a gun. Why should the cops be the only ones who are in a position to stop a threat (or limit the damage once it starts)?
At least the American Christian fundies are trying to oppress via the rule of secular law. Islamists and Islamic fundamentalists just chop off your head or throw you off a building and don't give a damn about secular laws. Both groups are a danger to a secular society. But I'd rather deal with that group that goes through the legal motions and fight them in court or the legislative process, than the one that threatens actual violence.
