"I genuinely believe what defines a society is how it treats it's most vulnerable members, not how much money you can make, how far you can progress up a ladder or how many wars you win." - spot I tend to agree - on one hand America as a nation gives a lot of aid to poor countries and Americans as individuals are very charitable, helpful people. But on the other hand downtown Augusta Ga has an INSANE amount of vacant buildings that could be used to house the homeless but they never will be. And I don't measure success by how much money you make HOWEVER the flip-side of making more than you really need is not quite making enough....which gets you homeless or on food stamps, etc. There is not much "middle ground" when there is no free healthcare, and a justice/penal/law enforcement system where justice has to purchased. Thus it's best to err on the side of financial success versus financial failure. America sadly has a strong "kick them when they are down" "dog-eat-dog" leaning. That's why "progressing up the ladder" is not an option because (unlike in our Hollywood movies) there are few second chances - things can snowball very quickly here. As for winning wars we don't really have an option. If your country gets in over it's head you have our military to save you in a "fast & furious" manner! If the US loses it's game over - who is going to save us? And then (soon to follow) you? Thus we have to be the fastest, strongest, most lethal military among our peers. Pound-for-pound other militaries among our allies are AWESOME but they just don't have the numbers, logistical systems, and quick response time for long-term sustainability against a top level military like China, Russia, North Korea, etc. etc. That's just the math of the situation in our world in 2018. "Second best gets you dead" I guess would sum up the attitude that spills over into a lot of areas. But it's that mindset that brings a lot of very hard working, competitive, optimistic immigrants here in the first place. There is a lot of opportunity but you have to compete hard for it. Immigrants with a strong, tough work ethic (almost all of them actually) thrive here. To that I say "good!" It forces us native born to step up our game or find our own opportunities. If we get fat & lazy & complacent? Blues artist John Lee Hooker said it best: "serves you right to suffer baby".
Even the Federation sounds great, but does dodgy things. What matters is that we hold them to the things they say, and condemn if needed the things they do. We can't let patriotism blind us to the former. A guy from Queens once said it best. With great power, comes great responsibility. He never once bitched "but I was stopping Electro!" when someone's dad died in a mugging he could have prevented.
I forget where you claim to live, but would you care to point out how many caravans of desperate 3rd World flotsam are marching toward your borders demanding to be let in?
flotsam (n.): the wreckage of a ship or its cargo found floating on or washed up by the sea. People or things that have been rejected and are regarded as worthless. Your daily reminder that Fleshlight is a piece of trash.
The idea of the caravan migrants being floating cargo from a shipwreck is an interesting metaphor for their evacuation from the failed nation states of center & south america.
I really need to post about President Trump curing people with incurable diseases with his hair on Yahoo more often.
Wasn't that the one where he fought with the power of nympo and used a wooden sword that really looked like a big phallus when he waved it around? I remember that one being entertaining for more than one reason.
I think so, might be getting mixed up with Wicked City....I'm thinking of the one where he fought his way through a city to confront a psychic guy.
Most of our-I think they're called irregular border crossings-are folks that either could't get legit in the US or were just passing through there to get here in the first place so they could apply as refugees. Old fashioned border hopping job seekers in my experience are plain old white people who came to visit and stayed... I've hooked a couple up with cash work, and dated one for a while some years back. People making undeclared waiter level wages (including tips) are bordering the threshold of 100% tax returns anyway, and not utilizing the social net, so not like I'm feeling fucked over as a taxpayer. Nor is it like we don' have space for them.
I haven't gone anywhere (other than my usual travels), but just don't have much time for Wordforge. How long can I stay? Probably until the next time I get so busy with so many things for weeks or months at a time that I don't have time to see what inane ramblings profound truths are being posted here. Whenever that happens, I sort of "get out of the habit" until the next time I decide to drop by. In other words, within a few weeks or at most two or three months, you probably won't see me around much again for quite a while. And even while I'm "here", don't expect me to post all that much. I'm way too busy for that now. But it's good to see people haven't forgotten me...
BTW, I see Federal Farmer rated the opening post "sad". Now isn't that a surprise? Here's the honest truth: I used to be a fairly faithful Republican, not because I thought the party was perfect, or even close, but because I thought it was so much better than the Democrats that I couldn't imagine ever voting for a Democrat. Under Reagan, though, I became dissapointed with the Republicans, because his presidency just didn't produce all that much in terms of positive, lasting results. Then, under Bush (W, not 41), I became disillusioned with Republicans, to the point that I pretty much stopped voting for them and started voting independant. But it took the Trump era for me to actually become disgusted with Republicans. He is a national disgrace, and the fact that 35 to 40% of the people actively support him is a very troubling sign. No, I have not become a Democrat. My opinion of Democrats has not improved just because my opinion of Republicans has declined so badly. But too much of what I am seeing in America today reminds me all too much of the process Germany went through in the 30s: the racism, the easy scapegoats, the ultra-nationalism under pretense of being "patriotic", and even the bullying of all who disagree. I firmly believe the American Constitution will prevent the US from going where Germany went, but the fact that so many people are even thinking along those lines is a very, very bad sign. The international reputation of America is right down in the toilet. My kids have both gone ahead with becoming French citizens, and I am seriously thinking about doing it myself, even though France is far from an ideal country. (My first choice would be Canada, especially as I am one-quarter Canadian already. But I was born on the American side of the border, and have never lived in Canada, so I have no possibility to apply for Canadian citizenship.) Here's an interesting statistic: in the USA, roughly 70% of Evangelicals support Trump (which is, IMNSHO, absolutely disgraceful). But among American Evangelicals who live outside the US, there must not be more than 10 or 15% who support him. I think the difference is that people who actually know something about the world see through his simplistic rhetoric much more easily. He is a true demagogue, and his success is mainly due to the fact that so few Americans actually know all that much about the rest of the world.
Emphasis mine. Erudite, world-traveled, multilingual, no scandals (and I betcha you don't even like golf), you'd know reams more than the Asshole in Chief. Hell, man, I might even vote for you.
