    Agnosticicism IS my feelings.

I don't think there is a god, at least not a god as described in any of our religions, but I can't assert with certainty that there is no god, and since from what we know of science it's impossible to know what came before the big bang it's not something I worry myself thinking about beyond the initial examination of religions to see if they gave the answers.

Well, either there was some other universe before the big bang, and this is the result of it's death, for example, or there was no "before the big bang". If the latter is true then either "existence" is due to a "God", or not.

So make up your mind what you think, and come back to me.

Or, the big bang came from a blackhole in another universe, and every blackhole makes a universe, and we're really in a multiverse that's an infinite tree of universes.

    What's the problem.

"Agnostics" are really either atheists, like Bailey, who have become scared by the word, or closet Believers who feel guilty about not beeing arsed to find a religion.

No. I've said before, noone finds it necessary to attach analogous terms to atheism and agnosticism to belief or lack thereof in pink unicorns.

That analogy would be worth something if the pink unicorns were attributed to being the agency of first cause, rather than merely existing.

I've said before in other threads, I'm agnostic with heavy athiestic leanings. What is it that makes you want to plug people into the little alloted slots so much? I have no idea if anything caused the universe to come into being other than a random fluke of physics, but don't think any of our religions have the answer. I don't see a reason to shorten every belief or attitude into a single short descriptive word.

It's much the same reason I despise the whole left/right thing in politics, because by putting people into those classes, you often end up pushing them into even further extremes apart.

Exactly, I don't see a need to summarise my beliefs in a way to explain them more easily to people. I don't see the question of whether or not there was a god behind the big bang (given it isn't something we can investigate) as being any more worthy of a special term than your pink unicorns. So why do you try so hard to class people in this case while on the other hand argue against the whole concept of having special terms to describe peoples beliefs on the matter?

Because some things are black and white. The light's on, or it's off. You're naked, or you're not. You believe, or you don't. Some things simply don't have a "sorta."

That's perfectly fine - but the it's not 'you either believe, or not' but 'there is either a god or not'.

If you want to say: 'you either believe or not (that there is a god)' you should have said 'you either believe or not that the light is on'. In short: a false comparison. Maybe that sounds irrelevant, but after correcting your comparison, making it 'there either is a god or not' you automatically see there is a third option: you don't know. Which is exactly what agnosticism says: we don't know. In fact: we can't know.

So Fox's whining about agnosticism being to vague is only his problem, he wants things to be black or white, he wants to be rid of the unknown, which is exactly what the problem is with religion - they want an explanation for everything, now, and can't accept the fact that sometimes we just don't know. Admitting that is the only intellectually tenable position.

Some things are black and white, yes, but if you make a comparison with the light being on or off, or being naked or not, it's a false comparison if you use it with

Zenow covered it, but using your light analogy here is where I am coming from.

There is a light in the bedroom I am in right now. I want you to tell me if you believe it is on or off.

By your logic, since it must either be on or off you need to hold a belief about the fact regardless of whther you have any way of actually knowing it's state.

Just because you don't agree doesn't make it whining :marathon:

only intellectually tenable position? you pretentious cunt

I could waste my breath and talk from a philosopher's point of view and say that we can't "know" anything, but I won't bother.

That's not the same. Can you in your room tell me the exact wattage/temperture of the bulb? The brand of light bulb?

Anyway, humans being here at all is just an accident. If that asteroid hadn't hit the Yucatan millions of years ago, mammals couldn't have evolved. That blows my mind. So, we will have to go someday to make room for the next big thing.
