There's talk about giving Ukraine nukes now, possibly in the context of a peace agreement...

Well, pretty soon the U.S. won't be interested in helping sovereign democracies defend themselves against expansionist autocracies, so somebody is gonna have to step up as a world leader.

Meanwhile, every former British colony (minus Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa, and maybe South Africa) are probably muttering, "Here we go again..."

Zelensky said for the first time that he'd be willing to come to some sort of accommodation that fell short of regaining all territory...

Well, he's only got a month until Trump sells him down the river, so playing to Trump's desire to be seen as a dealmaker is probably wise.

Luckily (or perhaps not, since it IS Trump and he might do it), Putin seems intent on ignoring any peace deal that doesn't involve a wider discussion of "Europe and the world" i.e. get rid of NATO.

I am deeply saddened to hear that. The only consolation is that they've made those territory gains so hard for Russia that the cost far, far outweighed the benefit.

    That Starmer did that.....

    1. Without any parliamentary discussion.

    2. An incoming US president that's very much 'America First' and has admitted he doesn't like NATO

    3. While our armed forces are little more than ceremonial and have had yet more cuts.

Is insane, do they know something we don't?

He sho/could've done that two years ago, saved tens (hundreds?) of thousands of lives.

Have you heard his latest proposal?? Russia temporarily keeps the occupied territory but the entire county goes into NATO - why would Putin agree to that?? Is he trying to be a comedian again?

Yeah, it's a shame the Ukrainians didn't just roll over and let the Russians conquer them from the word "go". Uppity little assholes.

All he had to do was say "we won't join NATO". This is how it was always going to end, America was never going to support them forever - Europe just follows the USAs lead - he was always going to have to negotiate - he's in a weaker position now, not a stronger one.

    No.
Russia doesn't get to dictate who Ukraine plays with.
Why is this such a hard concept for people like you?
Plus, how well did negotiation work vis a vis Crimea?

Context - in his prior TBBS incarnation as ED-209 (not our ED-209), DeadXenoBitch regularly shat his pants at ANY provocation of Russia lest they rain down nuclear fire on our noggins and has been arguing that Ukraine should bend over and apply the lube since Day Fucking One.

A starting point in negotiations is just that, though.

Trump has put him in an awful position. Because while it might be the case that negotiating a peace is necessary (lest things get even worse for them militarily) the emphasis Trump has put on doing a quick deal incentivises Putin to ask for more and more.

Unfortunately they do, bigger bully and all that. It's not right but it's reality - lets face it if Canada or Mexico wanted a Russian or Chinese presence they'd suddenly need some freedom.

Notice how everything I said was true?

America will only support as long as it's electorally popular - turned out to be true, even though they all insisted I was wrong and they'd support right to the bitter end and that I was an idiot for thinking it.

It will end in negotiation - wars always do, he could've done it two years ago - they had a deal ready that "Boris" told him not to sign.

Ah. Well, to paraphrase a quote, I guess it's okay to sacrifice someone else's liberty for your safety.

Yeah I don't want to die for Ukraine - especially when a deal was on the table - sue me.

"It's the best money we've ever spent, because we're weaking Russia without the loss of American life" - Lindsey Graham - so so noble.

Any that aren't in NATO - not our business.

Only humanitarian aid and taking evacuees.

My position has been and will always be that if Ukraine wants to fight, we should help them. If they want to stop, we should also support that.
We shouldn't base it on how afraid we are that Putin will nuke everyone.
    Evil must be opposed.

You can't mock Graham for that and then turn around and say Russia can invade any country they want because it's not our business.
