The problem with trying to play Trump is that, clearly, he's in Putin's pocket so Zelensky can't trust ANYTHING he says. Look at how much Trump's attitude changed within a few weeks of being elected, and that was with Zelensky sucking up to him.
So with that being the case, Zelensky is better off doing what he did today I think.
