I have seen video of what purports to be Russian strikes on tanker cars carrying nitric acid in Ukraine. There are legitimate industrial uses for nitric acid, so tanker cars loaded with it wouldn't be at all unusual in an industrialized nation. Blowing them up would be a way to use chemical weapons without actually deploying chemical weapons, if you know what I mean.

    Boo!

    UPDATE

When this article was initially published, it said Mi-17 helicopters could be among the new arms transfers slated for Ukraine. After the article was published, a U.S. defense official said that had been ruled out. The article has been updated.

My question was "who's gonna fly 'em?" I would guess that's the real problem. Personally, I'm really hoping the claim that the UK was going to send a batch of Harpoons is correct. Start taking chunks out of the Russian Navy and that would be a very interesting development. :corn:

I don't really understand the dynamic with India. They seem to align with Russia just because the US aligns with Pakistan - is that the case? And why does the US align with Pakistan? I don't see what they get from that relationship.

AIUI (which is admittedly pretty surface level), India aligned with the USSR ideologically initially (they were quite socialist for some decades after independence), and then more so after the Sino-Soviet split and the multiple invasions of India by China. That the US was helping Pakistan so much (trying to avoid making the mistakes it did in Iran, AFAICT; it helped that they had no oil that Britain needed to fund its welfare state, and that at least in West Pakistan, the communists and even socialists were largely politically unimportant) didn’t help. Then of course the US needed Pakistan’s help to supply its efforts in Afghanistan, both in the 80s and 2000s. Since the fall of the USSR, India has been trying to play a middle ground between all of the larger powers, buying defense systems from everyone, but especially Russia, because, again, China keeps invading, and the US keeps funding Pakistan.

Good, a strong unified front is needed to make sure that Russia doesn't get ideas about moving into other countries.

I’d add that Nehru along with Tito, Nasser and a couple others was a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement.

India played footsie with both the Soviets and the US. Played one off the other to try and get better deals.
