And you think the ChiComs AREN’T doing this?

Or you just think the CCP’s regulatory umbrella is better than the US’s in terms of free expression?

He says this in a world where the USSR, PRC, North Korea, the current Russian federation, and dozens of other totalitarian regimes without ANY freedom of expression exist. What a tool.

They aren't under the CCP's regulatory umbrella. TikTok does not even operate in China.

That's because China censors the hell out of their original app by ByteDance, Douyin, which both apps evolved out of. China doesn't allow TikTok content on Douyin - can't be giving access to western ideas.

And after years of denials, a Rutger study concluded that TikTok amplifies or suppresses content based on Chinese government polices.

No, you are having histrionics that both parties in the US want Tiktok to be divested from a Chinese corporation because of pretty sound findings that China is using that corporation to promote disinformation in the US. That is your 'largest attack on freedom of expression ever'.

Yes, but that isn't the same thing. TikTok in the US is regulated by the US.

Nope you’re not alone. And @RickDeckard is right, if this goes the way Congress wants it then get ready for a Tick Tok files where we find out that the intelligence community is using Tic Tok to sensor people. Whether you care or not will depend on who’s in the White House, of course.

Oh, and the US bill will only ban Tiktok on app stores if it doesn't divest itself from it's Chinese parent company, which itself is regulated by Chinese laws, which include the fact it has to accomodate Chinese intelligence requests for user data.

It has been banned outright by numerous governments due to security concerns on government networks. These include the European Commission, the European Council, all United Kingdom government agencies, 68 Australian governmental agencies, New Zealand's parliament, the US Army and Navy, and banned outright for all users in India, Nepal, Syria, Afghanistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. And oh yeah, China itself.

This latest action is after a Trump era executive order was revoked by Biden in order to investigate if there was indeed a security concern for US interests. Both parties have agreed there is, and Biden has stated he will sign the divestment order if it is sent to him by congress.

Oh, and 34 US state governments have already banned it on government devices, and dozens of US universities have banned it outright.

And Ireland fined Tiktok 345 million Euros for illegally tracking data on children.

Personally, that nonsense with 'Osama Bin Laden had a point' was a little too blatant, they put their dick in the door, and now it's going to get shut hard on them.

This feels to me like a really clumsy bandaid for a larger problem about data collection and privacy, but with the primary concern being a state actor, it’s not immediately clear that this is a terrible assault on free speech. That said, I think the current bans on it on government devices are probably about right, and maybe a Surgeon General’s-type warning might be better: “Using TikTok may be hazardous to your privacy and you should assume the Chinese government is spying on you with it.” Pelosi’s speech in favor of the forced divestment was utterly cringeworthy.

It is a lie that any of the people in congress care an ounce about chinese government or any other data mining.

The only reason why they are doing this is because someone told them progressive kids get together about voting for muslim dems and bernie sanders. They only care about the danger to their campaigns, and they are so old and stupid they think that the kids won't just find a wat to use tik tok, or that they have other means of grouping and endorsing.

It is really obvious there is an increadible zionist propaganda twist to all of this. OMG tik tok might have allowed people to speak against isreali genocide so now they really have to ban it, and it certainly doesn't help that none of them liked the way AOC danced and had fun on it.

I am all cool with keeping this off of government and corporate provided equipment, but China is not going to destroy us by figuring out some furry in nebraska is doing the fucking floss dance to taylor swift. Really, we are worried about those videos and the data mined from teenagers cell phones bringing down the nation? No, we are worried that kids might figure out we are shelling out a lot of money to fucking Isreal so they can commit genocide, and a lot of that tax money is getting recirculated into corporate lobbying which is financing the opposition to progressive candidates who are pointing things out.

You are so worried about this shit you have completely missed how the dems sank Katy porter for informing us and actually asking decent questions of corporate goons. Just keep letting the Isrealis suck your blood and childdren's futures so they can kill a bunch of palestinians in your proxy war against Islam.

Where the fuck are all of your caring people with most of our government officials using a completely compromised Twitter? Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and Putin all got together and gang raped up with propaganda from twitter and have been pushing all sorts of disinformation while banning as much as they can from the left.

The only thing that has saved anyone is Elon trying to cover his right wing fascism with the the threads used to make the emporers clothes.

Anyone with a twitter account is a complete hypocrite if they complain about tik tok. every one of you fucking twittards needs to STFU and be silent, bucause you are all at Fedderal Farmer levels of hypocracy and sucking the fucking cunt of propaganda for Trump and his twitter bros.

Most of those other countries have also at a bare minimum imposed heavy restrictions on the rest of social media, so no. :borg:

At any rate, I don't live in any other country but this one and I know full well ours is ramping up towards dictatorship, , so I'm not willing to give the US any grace on their motivations unless they're also gonna hammer down on Facebook, which killed democracy here, or Reddit that's filled with incels, or Xitter, whose CEO is openly antisemitic to the point of chasing off any halfway respectable advertiser.

this may be one of the most astute typos ever made.

I don't really have an opinion, let alone any interest in TikTok. What little I've seen is annoying and the format-which often seems to be 1/3 screen pans of movies with one of about 5 EDM tracks competing with the dialogue- I can only describe as "stupid".

My take away seems to be that the CIA is mad the CCP got ahead of them in the social media data mining app gap, and because the US has to maintain the illusion of respecting international IP laws, they've gotta shut it down before they can release their own (ideally next gen) version.

    Am I close?

Banning tik tok is like putting up a few miles of wall along the mexican border for border security. It doesn't even slow most of the people down. It does not even serve the purpose of stopping the progressives from organizing. It is a worthless solution by a bunch of ignorant fucks tryingf to pretend they are doing something to solve a problem that they do not understand because they are so old and tired.

You are probably right. Another reason they are doing this is they can't use the patriot act to spy on tik tok activity when it is owned by China. The patriot act oes not work on chinese apps, but if they had to divest and have a US operating company in charge of all the data mining then they can use it to trak all of us with secret FISA warrants if we speak out against Isreal. If we say bad words about Isreal we become instant ISIS operatives in the minds of @14thDoctor and his zionist INCEL army.

To 14th FOAD you fucking tool.

Oh, it's definitely giving Patriot Act vibes.

If Congress wants to address data mining, Congress should address data mining. Pass consumer protection laws that spell out what any service provider has to do to protect user privacy if they want to operate in the United States. (I say "service provider" because it's not just social media platforms ... everyone from Google to Netflix to Amazon has loads of information about their users that advertising agencies would love to get their hands on.)

Why haven't they? Probably because there's lots of good money in data mining for American businesses that hire lobbyists to make sure it stays that way.

TikTok probably does lots of shitty things. But the answer to that is to regulate against those shitty things, not target just one company.

Other things that Congress probably should pass:

    - A regulation prohibiting TikTok, or any other foreign-owned app, from being installed on any device used by a government employee or contractor for government business. (That's not really a law affecting citizens, it's a rule set up by an employer for its employees.)

    - A law placing similar restrictions on any device that is ever used to store HIPAA or FERPA-protected information.
