The big "Sokar and gang" negrep thread

I never knew that Sokar and his gang were cops. The knowledge that they are is a little bit frightening and encourages me in whatever criminal instincts I might have.

For what it's worth, the volume of negreps I've recieved has been decreasing.

The repwarriors are too busy trying to justify themselves that they don't have the time to do their jobs properly any more.

I just can't get this the penetrate with some people.

It isn't "hurting" anyone that is the goal. These guys are trolling and trolling is about one thing: Getting a reaction. The fact some of you think it's about "hurting" people, well, that says more about what you think and feel about rep than the reality of the so-called "Warriors".

Oh, and the initial protests against rep whining threads were not the Rep Warriors...who love them as they are tangible trophies that their trolling nabbed a fishie...but some of us who really don't give a shit about the rep games and don't want to constantly hear about it or have anyone try and drag us into it.

Okay, if that's all there is to it, you're essentially admitting that the Rep Warriors' major reason for being here is to troll. This suggests that if you eliminated rep, they'd all leave in a huff.

i think it suggests that we'd have a bunch of useless posts in every thread rather than the repwhine threads, which can be waaaay more easily ignored for those posters who genuinely don't give a shit. please don't take away rep and turn all those trolling negs into posts that clutter up otherwise decent threads. the rep feature is entertaining them. let it, IMO!

There is no punishable offense here without a rule change. People are not protected from being trolled in the Red and Gray Rooms. If the rep stuff is truly hurtful to someone, they should not be hanging around the Red Room anyway, as far worse things get tossed around than little red squares.

Your first sentence is wrong because your second sentence, which is supposed to demonstrate the first one, is incomplete.

Trolling is not about simply "getting a reaction." It is about "getting a negative reaction." You should realize this. If "trolling" just causes people to have a good time laughing at you, then you are a total failure as a troll.

But getting a negative reaction can happen only if people are offended, bothered, insulted, or something else. IOW, hurt.

And if "30 people whining about rep makes for a dull forum" so much so that you have to complain about how it bothers you, what about the people doing the trolling in the first place? It seems to me that you are going about things entirely backwards here. To you, the problem is not those who engage in the disruptive behavior, but those who complain about it.

I assure you that in psychology, you meet a lot of people who are hurting very much over the mean things other people say about them, and the way they act, even if nothing physical has ever been done. I'm very surprised that in your line of work you haven't met such people, very often.

Pretending that people are all Mr. Spock and will not react to offensive communications simply doesn't correspond to the real world.

And it's easy enough for those of us who have huge amounts of rep, and are pretty well liked, to say, "Hey, it doesn't matter, rep doesn't hurt." Is that really what we think, or is it what we think because no one has tried continually to make fun of us, insult us, and make us feel unwelcome?

Note that I am not saying we should get rid of rep, or make rules against trolling, or anything like that. I'm just saying that some people are offended by the things that are said to them, and the old dodge of using the medium in which is was said to imply that it should have no effect ("words on a screen") is just a strawman.

I'd wager that at least as many hateful things (both in substance and volume) are said in the open forum of the Red Room than through rep. Probably more, in fact yet I don't see any calls for shutting down the Red Room.

Rep is a delivery system. The same "repholes" that everyone is complaining about would be just as "nasty" if the rep system were eliminated tonight. "Jerks will be jerks", as they say.

I just can't identify with someone who gets upset at what a stranger "comments" to them at the bottom of a post, though.

^Plus it's way easier to get a post noticed than it is a rep comment, and rep comments have character limits.

Actually, from the looks of things, there is no indication that getting rid of rep, or even of neg rep, is about to happen. That's just sensationalism.
