it's like a fried jelly donut, only traditionally made with more eggs and butter than regular donuts. It's traditional to eat them on Fat Tuesday. The stores here have them, but they are shipped in, and often stale when they get here. Really, donuts should be eaten on the *day* they are made - the sooner the better. Warm from the fryer is best. Day-old's suck.
