Perhaps we're conflating two different things.

Looking at something else like health care.

It's absolutely correct that more resources should go into health care services for a city than a rural region, as there will be more cases that need treating.

However it would be incorrect to point at a large city having more cases of death due to cancer as evidence that health care doesn't work.

I would deprive the cartels of their revenue by allowing the drugs to be sold legally, and focus on those people who can't indulge their habits without harming others.

This is perfectly consistent with any other position I hold.

hmm... so how do we focus on the latter? as we know from the cannabis experience that does work (current average is $60-80/oz here at regulated dispensaries for something that very rarely corelates to social ills)

safe supply and supervised consumption sites?

I don't care WHY. Wailing about himan nature accomplishes nothing. I am deciding where to allocate resources. And it's not gonna be Rural Bumfuck Nowhere if you're looking for meaningful reductions in gun violence.

You let people do as they will, then land on them with both feet when they hurt someone.

    so no prevention, only response.

that doesn't sound like the philosophy of being prepared for contingencies...

Preparedness is not the same as actively punishing people for what you think they might do.

like, yesterday I mention in my BR thread the three opioid overdoses I was in attendance to.
the first pair were on site at work, and pretty mild. making sure they were breathing was all there was to it.

the third one was after work in a locla park. it took several hits of narcan to revive her. Total cost was whatever those were worth and some time before calling an ambulance to basically do the same thing the OPS folks at work do.

Compare that to if she'd simply died there in the middle of the day. How many cops and other EMS personnel does that take? Last one I was at was the fire dept paramedics, the ambulance crew, three police units... you get the idea. Dead junkies from poor drug quality are expensive. Give them safe supply and a place to do it and they're pretty harmless... hell, more of them are even functional.

umm invoking stats tends to back up facts.
at least in comparison to linking an article from a blatantly yellow journalist that even local conservative readers find extreme.

Stats are just data. And people can misconstrue data to say anything they want it to say. That’s why you always ask for the data behind the stats.

Deprivation of property is punishment. Doing it without convicting someone of a crime is an unjustified infringement.

And obviously the "might" is hurting someone.

Stats can be selectively presented to support an opinion. Such as invoking "per capita" when it is well within one's means to narrow the focus on the vast majority of the problems.

Like how you'd rather weigh the stats using a smaller and selective sample size to support your point rather than discuss numerically equal ones?

The latest right wing talking point is that the cops were gun shy (my words not their's) for fear of being accused of overreaction and now they're being accused of not doing anything. Because handcuffing elementary school children is the same thing as standing around with your finger up your ass while kids are being slaughtered. :waiting:

Yeah, not getting why the cops were there at all. He is justifiably upset. Doesn't matter if the cops acted immediately, or if they fucked around for an hour (as they did). He lost a grandchild. He's right to be angry, he's right to ask questions. The proper response is to STFU and listen to him. Doesn't matter what his life was like before this, doesn't matter if the police did the right thing or not (and they didn't). He's in pain and asking that people listen to him. The bare fucking minimum that we can do is to give him that.

Ok? Not sure how that is relevant to what started this tangent:

You made a claim that is either irrelevant (places with larger populations will tend to have more of everything happen) or not backed up by any of the evidence provided. I lean towards the latter based on the way you keep wanting to ask for different stats seemingly until you get one you like and change the debate to something different entirely.

I gotta say, rural conservatives' fantasies about cities they don't live in, and rarely if ever visit, is one of my favorite genres of fiction.

Some interesting statistics (statistics, not anecdotes) about rural and urban gun violence rates can be found here:
