There already was a ban on the weapon this guy used. You just don't want to have an honest conversation about that because it would force you to confront the fact that you believe that these massacres are a price worth paying for gun rights. Which is also why we get this nonsense about maximum security schools.

Just like abortion is not going to be overturned. Guess what, this is why we are fighting. So, those in power can take away your right to a gun and my right to control my body.

Not you specially, but Paladin and others. You just happen to be in the way. Your rights will be taken away the same as mine.

    Absolutely.

"Schools should have security measures on par with maximum security prisons or nations under constant terrorist threat" is not a sane thought.

The guy in the fishbowl hits the panic button when someone walks in with a weapon. Ensures the security door doesn't get opened for them.

Honest conversation starts with how you deal with all of the weapons in private hands. Are you willing to kick in every door in the country, yes or no?

People can act however they want. They just need to bear in mind the fact that actions have consequences that will not take their claims of emotional trauma or tragic victimhood status into account.

Facepalms and dumbreps is all your inanity deserves.

It’s not like folks haven’t done mandatory buybacks in other countries (including Canada and Australia which had similar gun cultures to the US) or even here the US.

We passed an assault weapons ban (and mass shootings dropped).

Individual states have taken measures and gotten folks to turn in weapons without kicking in doors.

Hell, Forbin is one of the biggest gun nuts we’ve ever had and what did he do when NJ required him to get rid of, turn in or destroy his high capacity mags? He rage destroyed them. The vast majority of people will follow the law (even if grudgingly) when it comes down to it. Especially when you add criminal liability.

No need to kick in doors to get rid of 90% of assault weapons (and keep that number from growing).

The thought experiment "how can we reliably prevent armed people from getting into schools" is worth performing, and if not for his history I would be assuming UA was a satirical act showing the impracticality of doing so through security measures.

No one is asking for or expecting a 100 percent solution.

The trouble is, as has been pointed out, metal detectors are a 0 percent solution.

    A. People who are willing to bring a big-ass gun and kill a bunch of folks are not trying to sneak their guns in and aren't going to be deterred by the notion that to bring their guns inside they will have to shoot the security guards/cops.

    B. Having a single entrance for people to come in and out of and making people go through metal detectors means that there's effectively a kill-funnel.

    C. If we want to pretend that the metal detectors are like Kryptonite to would-be shooters, all they have to do is relocate their killing spree to just outside the range of the metal detectors.

Also, no one is pretending that all criminals will start complying with all laws. However, making it more difficult to get AR-15s and similar guns is a better obstacle to a mass killing than relocating the mass killing 100 feet away.

fine.. so what does the panic button do?
sound an alarm at a monitoring station to contact emergency services? Release ninjas from the ceiling?

also, if he's already walked in with the weapon, you're literally locking the barn door behind the horses here.

but let's look at daily ops... you want 800 kids to go through that entry process four times a day?

logistics ain't one of your aptitudes, is it?

he'll jsut add two hours to the school day to allow for metal detector time.

or, more likely, cut class time by 30% to pay for the added police state.

Al, sweetheart... the reason for the face palms and dumb reps is because your suggestions are dumb. along with impractical, ineffective, and a total waste of money.

Saw parts of the newly-released video again.

I can't even express my rage. As someone who worked in law enforcement, I can't begin to comprehend how those officers stood around while children were being slaughtered. Apparently the screams of the children were edited out of the video.

Fuck the thin blue line. Every single officer that responded should be fired and charged with dereliction of duty. And if Texas doesn't have the guts to do that (which I suspect they don't), any officer with a conscience should resign and never work in any security-related field ever again. Then again, none of these assholes probably had a conscience to begin with.

Why do you become a police officer? Isn't it to serve your community and save lives when duty calls?

    Jesus fucking Christ.

No one is surprised that as a wanna-be fascist bootlicker, you offer one of the more authoritarian approaches, thereby putting the burden and inconvenience on literal children, for an approach that won't actually work. Rather than taking responsibility for your dangerous hobby or offering more practical, less burdensome solutions that don't rely on literal children having the same attention span and common sense as adults.

They can't get inside if they can't open the security door.

Even my little podunk schools had multiple entrances.

The metal detectors are just for the concealed weapons. An obvious long gun isn't getting past the security door.

Be wary of weasely inferences and dishonestly implied correlations. The definition of a mass shooting is pretty broad, and nothing about it requires an AR15 or even the broader category of a semi-auto rifle.

Disables unlocking from the outside and sends an automated call to police dispatch, like a bank teller.

Badge swipe->door->metal detector. I may have been unclear about that, but nobody chose "ask for clarification" over "jump to conclusions" anyway.

It can be multiple entrances. Never said it couldn't.

There is not one hoop, nor any series of hoops, that I personally could jump through that will prevent a shooting like this, because there was never any risk of me committing any similar crime. It would be an empty symbolic gesture for the approval of people who's entire existence is an empty fucking gestures. Symbolism over substance. Your failure to comprehend that is not my problem.
