I did not know UA was unemployed. Does @Jenee know he has quit his job? Oh wait, he hasn't so he is not willing to live by his own ideals.
I got it already. I just don't insist on pretending this is a righteous underdog fighting the power, rather than two packs of gangsters going
One of th ethings that's become annoying around here is that when they do a shoot, there'll be notifications that anyone walking past the background is "voluntarily" consenting to their image to be used. Well, I live here and as you're filming in front of my house, I don't get a real choice in the matter now, do I?
the shitty thing is that 30 years ago, they had to pay to populate BG like that. there was one TV movie I did back then where I basically got paid to ride an elevator all day.
even if your false equivocacy did hold, it's more about one side trying to eliminate a LOT of the other. Did you really enjoy "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" that much?
SAG-AFTRA’s Rejected Contract Demands Seem Beyond Reasonable You can read the contract at the link if you're so inclined.
Our Office is investigating the tree trimming that occurred outside Universal Studios where workers, writers, and actors are exercising their right to picket. The trimmed trees are LA City managed street trees. (Before and after photos below) https://twitter.com/lacontroller/status/1681456457936687104
UPDATE: With cooperation from the Bureau of Street Services, we have found that no tree trimming permits have been issued over the last three years for this location outside Universal Studios. Also, the City did not issue any tree trimming permits for the latest tree trimmings. https://twitter.com/lacontroller/status/1681690203013120001
SAG-AFTRA Approves 39 Indie Projects to Shoot During Strike, Including Two A24 Films https://variety.com/2023/film/news/sag-aftra-independent-projects-waivers-1235673546/ The independent studios agreed to abide by the terms of SAG-AFTRA’s latest contract offer until a final settlement is reached at which point it will switch to that. Crazy how these independent studios can manage to pay their workers while some of the largest corporations on the planet can’t.
So, what you're saying is that individuals in the entertainment industry now have more of a choice in the compensation packages offered by potential employers. Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems like the kind of thing that those who say people should take their services elsewhere should applaud.
Maybe someone who knows can comment, I thought SAG prevented unionized members from participating in non-unionized productions for profit. I do not fully understand why it is OK in some areas and not in others. For instance I have seen some youtube monetized productions have to lose cast if they became SAG members because those people were no longer allowed to be on the youtube shows even as an unpaid guest. The other thing I did not quite understand when I was speaking with Andrew Lincoln at a shitty little local convention was that he couldn't do dragoncon due to something with his contract. I do not know if that was SAG related, but I have seen him at corporate conventions. Dragoncon is specifically fan run as opposed to something like comic-con. I have gotten the idea about SAG being they are gatekeepers to enter the industry on more lucrative works. It is good for a union to keep pay for everyone at respectable levels, but when you are a barrier to independent entry or doing things for the little guy because you are pricing out independents from starpower that becomes a bad thing IMO. Then in the end I see huge stars making bloated budgets that push smaller projects into dev limbo with insane paychecks. Isn't throwing Tom Cruise into your movie end up shorting other production people because he is sucking up such a huge investment? Shouldn't SAG be out there fighting for the compensation of the lower guy by cutting large salaried actors pay. Also, shouldn't they be forcing lower pay for large salaried actors to push more employment through developing a larger number of projects? I am really talking about the superstars and not the lesser actors who are getting paid a whole lot less.
Independent films refer to them being independent of the larger studios, not being non-union. Their job isn't to make sure everyone is earning the same or people can't earn lots it's making sure that the base is fair.
being a non-industry person there is a perception that SAG ends up being a gatekeeper rather than a defender, but I will admit that trips my bullshit sensors because it probably comes from anti-union people who want to undercut the industry and it's regulations. In a larger sense unions have a real PR problem. Sometimes you get really corrupt unions who are a gatekeeper established gang in the US like the police. My thing is I want the creative artists I love to get paid to do the great things they do because that entertainment has enhanced my life in OMG ways. I don't want to see those people who make those great games and shows I enjoy fall into poverty because they gave me something I can enjoy over and over again. I really think entertainment is an area where there is infinite potential for infinite growth. our purpose is not to toil away to survive. We need to do the work, but we also need to create wonderful new media.
I guess what I am saying is I believe in the strike, and I talk to people locally so I want to tell them the reality of what is going on. It is important for people, including myself, to see where we should be focussing and not for nothing these old people are really into telling certain dynasty media people what they think. If I am getting it right it is the dynasty media practices that need to be reformed because they do not fit the new ways. Seriously, I am in the middle of rich karen land. I can twist them up on this shit and am pretty close to the source of old school media people. Yes, I fluff up my importance because I am sure there is net 0 influence I have, but when we are talking a mass movement that is my position to push a direction.
