The four years we lived in an apartment here sucked because I couldn't easily barbecue. There's an ordinance here that says you can't use grills within a certain distance of a building, which meant that I couldn't use mine on our second floor balcony and it was too heavy to carry up and down the stairs every time I wanted to use it.
The apartment I just moved out of - I loved that apartment, but I also couldn't grill on the second floor. I don't think the first floor patios could either, but they didn't have to drag the grills too far.
I always grilled on my apartment porches, and yes, that practice was illegal. Nevertheless, if you are a good grill man, it's worth breaking the law. As for a mortgage for the sake of grilling, yes, that is also worth it.
Even being able to have a little campfire would be nice. I hung out with a guy this weekend who made a small fire in his back yard, put a grate over it, and made us some rare venison steaks - delicious!
