I think that the problem is that what we need, and don't have, is an AI that is smarter than humans. Even if you assume that every AI system out there is programmed with the best of intentions, unless it's smarter than us, it can do a lot of damage. Ignoring all politics, there's been any number of times where our society has done things that it thought was the best solution to a problem, only for us to find out later that we made an incorrect assumption about something and that solution didn't do anything other than make the question worse. So, if we're going to use AI as a "guide," then we're going to need it to be able to look at the data we give it, what we want to do with it, and say, "It would be better if you did this." Because with an AI system that's as good as the best marketing departments in the world, it can sell us on a bad idea, fairly easily. Even if the intent behind that bad idea was a good one.
Why don't we look to more appropriate people to replace with AI? I am pretty sure AI can do a better job at Human Resources. We could probably replace divorce lawyers with it. We could downsize middle management and lose no productivity. Why are we trying to use AI to help people with eating disorders, or arm the fucking thing? Not for nothing, but it would probably make a better president as long as we did not give it the ability to launch a military offensive. We could replace certain GA and CO republican representatives in congress. We could replace republican voters with AI. I don't think AI could ruin subway sammiches any more than federal farmer.
Omni Magazine published a satirical Last Word column on AI back in the 80s that pretty much predicts where we are today.

Cubicles would be an improvement for many modern offices, as dire as that is. For a long time (my entire time working in offices) it's been about open plan workspaces, maximizing the ability for interruptions.
That's interesting, because ChatGPT swears blind to me that it's knowledge base only goes up to September 2021.... it also says it can summarise a scientific article based on a DOI, but when given one says it doesn't have access.
Might depend upon the version. ChatGPT 4+ is supposed to have more access to newer material on the web.
