The R-Word--should it be banned?

It is ironic to me that there offense taken. These names were taken to denote bravery, ferocity, nobility, power.. they were taken for reasons of prestige and honor.

The Redskins, Braves, etc.. were proudly displayed.. so maybe the logo was a bit to much of a caricature.. no one named their team to be belittled or defamed..

I think the bigger issue is the belief that their "offense" should be accommodated at the expense of the large majority who think this is a pretty stupid thing to whine about.

Is it that life breaking to anyone to have to remove something that reminds people of a rather heinous part of our history?

The article even mentioned that many people are pretty "meh" to the name as is...but if it becomes a big enough issue to affect the pockets of the owner(s), I'm sure it'll get rebranded anyway.

Yes it was and I am on the record on this board several times saying that All in the Family was one of the greatest things that ever happened to the civil rights movement because it made us look at prejudice in ways that made us laugh, but see it for the bullshit it is.

I agree! Only the majority should have a say in what is allowed to bother members of a minority.

And yet that's typically what happens. There are plenty of instances of fans making banners that depict rape between the mascots of what teams are playing, or other horrible things being done to them. There's also the way some tribes are effectively having their names co-opted from them so white people can make money off of them, not to mention the comparison to animals since the vast majority of teams have animal mascots. And the claim that using a name to honor people holds no water when those people say they do not want this "honor" and are ignored at best, and usually are just derided and insulted. If white people want to name themselves something that speaks to their supposed bravery or ferocity, they should use something from their own culture, instead of trying to use brown people as their mascots.

I thought about it and I was wrong on one point.

Actually they are quite astute in political posturing. They have an enormous monopoly in Albany. I am close to the Seneca nation.
