Seems to be just as good, and much the same, as Season One, which, given there's a new showrunner wasn't a given.

Pretty good opening. A bit slow but that is the cost of character development, of which there was oodles. It looked like the makeup budget has been increased. The previews for the upcoming episodes look tantalizing. What they did with those two characters was ballsy.

I haven't been paying attention. What did they do? Fire the original producer?

Nova, the current plot about the two kids was handled similarly in the comics.

Although there's no guarantee that the TV show will do what the comics did, only click below if you really want to be spoiled:

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

I thought that was a very lacklustre premier, given what we'd seen last season. Definitely didn't knock my socks off.

One of the problems is having kids present. Kids generally tend to ruin movies and tv shows for a variety of reasons, mostly because they can't act so it's tough for them to convey certain situations and they tend to be used as the cutesy thing for us to fawn over, which of course is entirely uneccessary.

The rest of my review is spoilerish so....

Other than that, this episode was pretty forgettable. Seemed more like a midseason filler episode rather than a season premier.

Hopefully they get their shit together.

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

    Just watched the premiere.

    With regard to the kids:

But as someone already pointed out, there have been significant departures from the comics already
so it's tough to gauge what they're sticking with and what they're changing as far as plot threads.

Re: tracker biker dude. I like at least that the show's obligatory "expert tracker" (holy Christ, how many hours of LOST were just shots of them following something through the frigging jungle back and forth?) has a plausible origin as a hunter/woodsman, and I love the additional tension created by the fact that he is a key figure in their survival but at the same time the brother of a guy they all hated, who probably isn't quite over the fact they ditched him.

The behind the scenes story is not promising, though: Frank Darabont, the guy who made the first season kick so much ass, left under duress because AMC wanted drastic budget cuts for this season, up to and including "off camera" zombie action where they all go out, come back in bloody and say "whew, glad that's over." like a damn sitcom. Darabont refused so it was a mutual parting. Kirkman the creator is still involved, and Season two was mostly wrapped when all this went down, but Season Three could be real shaky if any of this is true.

Oh well. It's been fun while it lasted...

Even signed up for Netflix looking for it. At least they have TAS. :sigh:

I thought it was decent. I did roll my eyes at all the heavy knife work Daryl had to do just to access a walker's stomach. You'd think it had an exoskeleton or something.

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

I thought this show was further along than just six episodes. So, when I started watching it on Netflix Sunday, I was a little peaved.

So, I got online to see how far into season two (or 1.5) the show was and how far behind I was.

I watched a couple episodes Sunday, then a couple more Monday night. DVR'd 2.1 in the middle of the night last night and just watched it.

I see no difference between season 1 writing and season 2 writing. - except, the new writers like the Daryl character and apparently want the audience to like him also.

I was a bit surprised by the the zombie stampede. Wouldn't they have smelled the living under the cars? Or, heard Blondie screaming in the RV?

They aren't dogs. Smell is just one sense.

And think of the fact that there is so many of the zombies bunched together that all their nasty smell and rotting flesh is masking the humans.

As for the girl screaming? Yeah you got a point there.

I liked the walkers sitting in the church, a nice recognition of the fact that some of them stay stuck in patterns from life (such as Morgans wife in the first episode coming home and trying to open the door)

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

Their smell isn't gross to them - that's what they were saying in the second episode. Their smell is normal and living smell is different.

So if a pack of humans were all stampeding ... well, walking slowly through there and some zombies were hiding under the cars, those living humans would smell them right away. Or, they'd smell something anyway and start searching for the smell.

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

The smell angle is legitimate in this version of zombies. There was an episode in the first season where a couple of the characters disguised themselves in rotting flesh and organs to cover their smell so they could walk among the dead. They totally should have smelled them hiding under the cars.

Depends which way you look at it. Most of the time the walkers reactions seem to be based purely on sight and sound. It could be less that they can smell living flesh, and more that they still have the part of their brain which says something that smells like death isn't good eating.

    Re: The Walking Dead 2.1

If we take what was presented - regardless of whether or not it's the character's impression of the situation (why would the writers write a complete lie?) then we should take that as 'the rule' until the writers tell us otherwise.

So until then, the living smell is as distinct to the zombies and dead smell is to the living.

Therefore, the zombies should have smell the living under the cars.

Zombies wouldn't have a stronger sense of smell than a human. In season one, they covered themselves in gore to imitate zombies, not to hide from them. They only showed one zombie sniff at them and it puts it's head within inches to do so. There's no reason to think they would be able to smell a human hiding under a car.

They're corpses that still retain mobility, flexibility and tremendous hunger despite the apparent lack of any internal bodily functions. Perhaps worrying about their sense of smell might be overthinking it a bit.

If you really want to sweat the details, consider this: Zombies attack and actually eat the living things they find, not just bite and rend. We know this based on Darryl's discovery of the small woodlan creature in zombie stomach.

So if eating is the goal, and zombies are ravenous...what happens to the meat? Does it just stay in the stomach, piling meal after meal until the abdomen explodes like a messy balloon?

    Do zombies poop?

The established storyline is that they smell us the same way we smell them.

If you can smell a rotting corpse from 5 to 6 feet away, they would be able to smell a living body from 5 to 6 feet away.
