Yeah, but that was them following Lucas's stupid "it rhymes like poetry" rule. Just like the last season of Thrones was fucked by "no, you have to break story tropes by twisting it to sad!! No happy ending!! Always sad!!". Following the story to where it wanted to go would have made a plenty melancholy ending without having to crowbar it with an ironclad rule.
Some are blaming a combo of covid ruining 2020, and Bob Chapek announcing shit too soon for why we still don't have a movie. https://comicbookmovie.com/sci_fi/s...ill-havent-become-a-reality-a207292#gs.759uig
Matthew Vaughn Details Failed Superman Trilogy Pitch, Says ‘Star Wars’ Has ‘Gone Wrong’ and He’d Reboot Luke Skywalker: Everyone Will Go ‘Bats— Crazy’
It can’t possibly be that the sequel trilogy had diminishing returns, they had to film Solo twice, Asoka was boring as hell with the exception of two episodes, Obiwan was lackluster, The Mandalorian lost the plot, Boba Fett was a disaster and Kathleen Kennedy purposely alienated half of their audience. That would require them taking responsibility for their failures.
Whether it's the original trilogy, the prequels, or the sequels... literally every Star Wars film made less money than its predecessor. No one should read anything into it (unless you have an agenda.)
"Diminishing returns" from two fucking billion is no failure. That's like accidentally turning lead into platinum in your garage, and being called a loser for trying to re-create it, and only making gold.
Do you know how Hollywood accounting works? You have to make 3-4 times the budget. But it’s interesting to see people say box office numbers don’t count when it’s “their” franchise. Even movies have to be political and partisan now.
Box office numbers absolutely count. Solo was the first Star Wars film to tank at the box office, which is probably why we haven't seen a film since then (the sequel trilogy was already in the pipeline). Every other Star Wars film has made a very tidy profit, even including the Rise of Skywalker and the prequel trilogy, which I actively fucking hate. Anyone who thinks Lucasfilm and Star Wars in general are in some kind of trouble are delusional. They are doing just fine, even though you may not like the direction some of the films or shows have taken. Most experts put the franchise value at $70-billion. Disney/Lucasfilm could literally do nothing and just collect the residuals and still make bank.
Yes, Rise of Skywalker sucked because of COVID. The ST made no sense because of COVID. Han Solo was because of COVID.
thing is though, it's a)the half of the audience nobody cares about or wants, and b) they're picking up in other demographics, most notably, women. even the grand nagus realized that losing 10% of half the potential market was worth it to double the potential market by opening it to feee~males...
observations. I can think of at least a dozen women I know between the ages of 35-60 who've become fans only since the ST. Significant because they're a market for D+ to be pandering to. I'll let you do your own googling, but I've heard the sci fi fandom in general is now pretty much an even split.
it wasn't claimed as evidence. i offered a hypothesis and when asked what I based it on I stated it was observational along with how it could be significant. this is where you disprove it by showing a decline in female fandom/ D+ subscribers/sci fi fans in general.
Disney didn't pay a king's ransom for SW to sit around collecting residuals. "Doing just fine" looks different to you or me compared to a Hollywood exec.
Agreed, but my point was that the Star Wars franchise is really not in any sort of trouble, other than perhaps being in a bit of a creative rut and pissing off fanboys like FF.
I wouldnt be surprised to learn that sci fi in general had always been much closer to a fifty-fifty split in gender but TIIC always leaned into marketing for boys. Hell, the majority of TOS' audience in first run was thirsty housewives simping over Spock and Spirk shippers who kept enthusiasm for the franchise alive through the 70s until sci-fi became big enough for studios to want to reinvest in the franchise again: But for Star Wars, there were a lotta women who got into it from the prequels too (no, really!) and Disney is fully aware that they have daughters they can introduce the franchise to. And don't get me started on the way multiple Reylo shippers have filed off the serial numbers from their AO3 fanfics to turn their books into best sellers on the NY Times...the Mouse Factory knew full well what it was doing by drawing in more women and they were right to do it.
that's in Toronto now/soonish. It'll probably wind up held over... at least 2/3 of the people I know are wanting to go... and burlesque doesn't really work in a large venue.
