If they could promise this with regard to the Taliban and AQ, they wouldn't need to threaten it regarding the U.S. The only way to defeat them is to go after them where they are, which happens to be Pakistan. Imagine what 130,000 ground troops could do in Pakistan.
I have to say I fully understand the Pakistanis' position on this. For whatever reasons, armed troops from a foreign country coming into your country without invitation is an invasion. Nevertheless, if they want to be credible, they should either do the job themselves, or invite help (it could be from the French instead of the Americans, for example, if they don't want to be perceived as letting the Americans dictate what happens in their country) to do it. Sitting on their hands and letting their country be used as a base for extremist militants, then taking military action against those who try to stop the extremists but not against the militants themselves, conveys a very strong message. And one that they perhaps would be wise not to convey...
Perfect response. We can do as we wish and the Pakistani army can continue to ride the fence. May not seem like it but this is progress.
