To have them defend the KKK you would need to go back to the 20s (second incarnation of the KKK) or back to reconstruction (first incarnation of the KKK). The third incarnation of the KKK (Civil Rights era to today) is too much of a joke to bother with.

There is really no way to say just how powerful the second incarnation of the Klan would've gotten if the Grand Wizard of Indiana had not beaten his girlfriend to death.

Besides, there was a really good television movie back in the 1980s IIRC about D.C. Stephenson, the murder and outcome. IIRC Lloyd Bridges played Stephenson's high powered lawyer while Ed Begley Jr. played the young and supposedly outgunned prosecutor.

Stephenson and David Duke (Louisiana) had some interesting similarities including real charm and a gift for making connections with other powerful people.

Everyone who studies American history, especially the Civil War and Reconstruction should be well versed in the history of the Klan.

But that first incarnation of the Klan was more openly violent than the later two versions. The second incarnation was much more politically astute.

The first incarnation was a direct response to the draconian policies that Congress passed.
