He has now officially died.

So sad to hear. I enjoy his music. I moved to L.A. a year ago, and a radio station I listen to on the way to work frequently plays "Free Fallin'", one of the most emblematic songs about L.A.

Apparently they're now saying that he isn't dead yet but also isn't expected to live much longer.

Yup. Rush to judgment. He's been hospitalized at UCLA Santa Monica and we've had news helicopters overhead like g-damn vultures all afternoon.

Of course, I'm also wondering why, if it was cardiac, they didn't immediately take him to the main UCLA campus, which is closer to Malibu and one of the top 5 cardiac centers in the country.

Damn it, either way. He deserved better.

Oh, and @Ten Lubak, just to add to your level of ignorance, UCLA's main campus, in addition to being one of the top 5 cardiac centers in the U.S., has its own MedEvac helicopter. They could have gotten Petty from Malibu to the roof of the cardiac suite in a matter of minutes, bypassing the execrable L.A. traffic (which would have been lighter on a Sunday night after Yom Kippur, anyway).

Probably the ultimate outcome. Depending on how many minutes he lacked oxygen, the Tom Petty we knew is no more. The DNR says he wouldn't want to live following a major cardiac event.

Don't Do Me Like That is a great song from an album PACKED FULL of great songs! "Shadow Of A Doubt" and "Even The Losers" and "Here Comes My Girl" are my favorites from "Damn The Torpedoes". Not a huge Petty fan, but a guy in my barracks in Korea in 1992 played the CD a couple of times so it's stuck in my memory pretty well.

So, he's off life support, but not officially dead yet? When will we know?
