MAGA Chuds Are Failing to Grow Their Audiences on Sites Like Gettr and Gab

After Donald Trump got canned from virtually every major social media site, conservative pundits and personalities urged the MAGA crowd towards a mass exodus to so-called “alt-tech” venues promising freedom from a supposed plague of left-wing censorship. This hasn’t worked out quite as well as planned, according to a new analysis by the Washington Post.

The Post tracked 47 “prominent right-wing influencers” on four sites: neo-Nazi hub Gab, MAGA-themed microblogging website Gettr, YouTube clone Rumble, and messaging app Telegram. In the year since Trump got himself kicked off sites ranging from Facebook and Twitter to YouTube and Pinterest, these sites have competed for a niche crowd of right-wingers who were urged by pro-Trump pundits and media personalities to register new accounts in solidarity with their big banned ex-president. Prominent right-wingers either saw an opportunity to cater to these new audiences or had little option but to do so following their own bans. Apparently, there isn’t enough chud to smear around, because the Post analysis found those 47 influencers’ followings on those sites have largely either stagnated or declined.

That’s bad news for all of the sites. Each of them will face even more competition from the forthcoming launch of Trump’s Truth Social network, with the exception of Rumble, which signed a partnership deal with him.

These kinds of platforms aren’t known for offering transparent metrics on their users and engagement. So the Post used the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine to track how those 47 accounts, who had previously “seen steady growth” on Twitter and other mainstream sites, fared in terms of follower counts on alt-tech sites over time. After an initial spurt of growth, the paper found, these accounts mostly petered out.

Among the 47 individuals the Post tracked are anti-vaxxers like Dr. Joseph Mercola, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Sherri Tenpenny; garden variety right-wing pundits and provocateurs like Dan Bongino, Charlie Kirk, and Steve Bannon’s podcast; conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones, Laura Loomer, and Lin Wood; and MAGA media like OAN and Epoch Times. Also making an appearance are Trump and his punching bag of a son, Donald Trump Jr.

Lin Wood, an attorney from Atlanta who promoted Trump’s failed lawsuits to overturn the results of the 2020 elections and has become a QAnon figurehead, got banned from Twitter after urging his followers to “pledge your lives” during the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. On Telegram, the Post analysis found, he quickly racked up 800,000 followers but is now down to 730,000, which the paper pegged at just 60% of his pre-ban following.

Alex Jones joined Gab in 2016 and was able to add roughly 25,000 followers a month in Q1 2021, but since then that average has dropped to 1,000. QAnon accounts have fared similarly poorly on Gab. After benefiting from a surge in followers in September 2020, when Facebook banned QAnon accounts, and the Trump bans a few months later, evangelists like the anonymous redpill78 and Jordan Sather have grown at a rate of just 1% a month.

OAN saw a similar spike on Rumble, according to the Post, growing its following to 750,000 a month after Trump’s ban. Since then, it’s plateaued at around 900,000 followers.

A few of the 47 accounts, like anti-vaxxer Sherri Tenpenny, did see steady growth—the Post found their Telegram account added roughly 10,000 new followers a month.

These are still considerable followings, but there are some caveats. The Post didn’t track video views or other forms of engagement, meaning the analysis only accounts for users who at some point clicked “follow.” While it’s possible that some of these users have become highly active and engaged on these sites, the stagnation in follower counts seems to indicate it’s more likely many of them just lost interest. Other than Telegram, which deletes accounts that haven’t been logged into for over six months, the Post had no way of determining which followers were dormant. It also had no way of knowing which followers might have multiple accounts, or are otherwise fake, like bots and sock puppet accounts. So even the plateauing numbers may be optimistic.

Gab and Gettr also both have reputations for artificially inflating their own influence. In 2019, a software engineer for Gab’s web hosting firm Sibyl System, Lilac Kapul, Ltd. told Hatewatch that Gab founder Andrew Torba’s claims of 800,000 users on the site seemed wildly off the mark, as it exceeded the actual web infrastructure Gab was renting by a considerable margin. Joe Rogan joined Gettr earlier this month, but seems to have quickly stopped using it after concluding the site’s practice of including a user’s Twitter follower count in the number displayed on their Gettr profile was “fugazi” and “fuckery.” Follower counts broken down by site were displayed under another menu, and Gettr only recently updated profile pages to show both numbers side by side.

This kind of analysis also doesn’t count for cross-site linking, which is a major driver of traffic and thus an indicator of influence. A recent report by the Anti-Defamation League found that content on Gab was shared on Twitter over 112,000 times by over 32,700 Twitter accounts between June 7, 2021, and August 22, 2021, potentially accounting for hundreds of millions of views. Rumble is less a social media site than a video dump. As Comscore data indicates, its traffic is dependent on referrals (links and embeds) from other sites and social media networks, on top of people who actually directly navigate to a Rumble domain. That the site relies so heavily on cross-linking, though, suggests its users could flock on a whim to another MAGA-themed competitor with more buzz.

Regardless of the complexities involved in measuring reach, the Post’s tally does show one thing clearly: MAGA and far-right personalities who joined these sites appear to have largely hit a brick wall in attracting others to join them. There are numerous likely reasons that this is the case—chief among them being that censorship-obsessed conservatives are a niche audience that can’t sustain this many sites. Many of the operators of these accounts never actually left sites like Facebook and Twitter, such as Dan Bongino, who has a small empire of conservative pages on Facebook. That is likely true of many of their followers on places like Gab and Gettr, meaning they essentially registered alts and could have slowly lost interest in seeing the same content on both sites.

Then there’s one other potential factor: Gab, Gettr, and Rumble are online echo chambers devoted to conservatives, as are the Telegram channels in question. The Post specifically mentions that this means they lack the daily gristle of entertainment news and viral cat videos that fuel places like Facebook, but there’s another problem. The crowd most likely to be attracted to alt-tech platforms are also the same people who enjoy yelling at, trolling, and arguing with liberals and leftists, a feature that is distinctly lacking at the new destination. (This also happens to explain why much of the content on alt-tech sites is just rage-bait screenshots of tweets and Facebook posts.)

Darren Linvill, who is the lead researcher at Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub, told the Post a vibrant social media site requires: “multiple perspectives so you can have lots of different conversations happening to bring in lots of different kinds of people. Right-wing platforms are one-trick ponies. They’re only going to, by their nature, appeal to the type of person they are branded to appeal to, and there’s only so many people in that world.”

Gettr CEO and former Trump aide Jason Miller told the Post that he is “not at all worried about our business long-term” and “The legacy platforms have bigger user bases but they treat them with total disdain.” Torba, Gab’s founder, told the paper the data is “irrelevant to Gab’s growth overall as a free speech platform for all people” and blamed the drop in engagement for pro-Trump commentators on the ex-president’s “nonstop vaccine shilling.” (Sure, ok.)

The Post separately reported last week that Truth Social is behind schedule and unlikely to launch for at least several months, despite previous hints it would launch in mid-February. Three people familiar with the matter told the paper that Trump ultimately believes Truth Social will be more lucrative and offer more control than signing deals with other sites, though he has been frustrated with the slow pace of development.

Trump's Truth Social to Roll Out the Censorbots

Donald Trump’s vision for a hellhole social media site free of liberal censorship, the yet-to-be-launched Truth Social, will rely on the same auto-moderation tools as its competitors—you know, the liberal censorship bots.

According to a Monday report by Fox Business, Trump Technology & Media Group (TMTG) has signed a deal with a company called Hive, which helps tech firms automatically detect content that is illegal or otherwise violates a company’s terms of service. TMTG CEO Devin Nunes, a former Republican congressman, told the network the ultimate goal is to help Truth Social become a “family-friendly” site—which apparently means barring things that social conservatives don’t like.

“We want to be very family-friendly, we want this to be a very safe place, and we are focused on making sure any illegal content is not on the site,” Nunes told Fox, adding they want Truth Social to be the “most family-friendly site.” Hive co-founder and CEO Kevin Guo added TMTG has been “very thoughtful and very proactive” about moderation, saying his technology can help identify content like “nudity, drugs, violence, hate speech, spam and bullying.”

“This is not political,” Guo continued. “...These are not things that are left or right or have any political baggage. When you think about these bigger companies, what they have put in place around things like misinformation, what they deem that to be, for instance, that’s their prerogative.”

Hive’s system is “not doing things like trying to censor any political talk,” Guo told Fox Business. “We don’t have models for that or models for misinformation.”

Trump is famously angry about the way tech firms police content—screaming at the mods of general discussion that they’re discriminating against proud, god-fearing patriots is sort of his thing, to the point where it became one of the cornerstone planks of his administration. In addition to endlessly yelling about things like shadow bans, he was an advocate of tearing up Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the law that gives websites extensive legal shields against liability for most kinds of user-generated content. He even went so far as to propose a plan to turn the Federal Communications Commission into a sort of online speech police that would fine social media sites he saw as censoring conservatives.

The use of auto-moderation bots highlights the contradiction at the heart of the Republican griping on the issue. Trump and crew appear to be trying to veer further into the learning curve than prior MAGA-themed sites like Parler and Gettr, which quickly found that a lack of moderation could lead to getting kicked off app stores, getting flooded with racist propaganda, or facing a wave of hentai spam and pictures of men in diapers. Truth Social could likely not function on even a basic operational level were it not to employ this kind of technology. Any tech platform that runs on user-generated content at scale can and likely will be used to upload illegal or highly undesirable content, ranging from child sex abuse material and material support for terrorism to malware and spam. Companies generally want to delete this stuff for obvious business and legal reasons.

If a site is big enough, human moderators usually aren’t up to the task of sorting through all of this, nor is it a good use of their time—so companies often rely on automated tools to handle easier tasks that can be offloaded, like deleting the same illegal JPEG over and over. There are all kinds of problems with this type of system, including that tech companies like Google regularly yank it out as an excuse to justify digital absentee landlordism, or to set up unfair regimes on issues like copyright. But for any site aiming to operate on a scale even approaching Facebook’s bootheels, as Trump seems to want, the use of bots is less a choice than a legal obligation.

As TechDirt’s Mike Masnick has regularly pointed out, prior sites marketing themselves as free-speech havens for conservatives have found themselves speedrunning to the kind of tactics they decry from the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

They just end up with a completely different set of arbitrary rules—which in this case apparently means users can feel free to spread antivax propaganda, election-fraud hoaxes, or QAnon conspiracy theories with wild abandon, but god forbid anyone sees a boob. Beyond its basic terms of service, Truth Social’s rules aren’t public yet, and TMTG didn’t respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment. But Truth Social’s stated intent of making the site the “most family-friendly” seems at face value to be much stricter on policing the kind of content that offends social conservatives, like Twitter, which allows porn; Reddit, which is full of boards dedicated to porn and drugs; and YouTube, which is full of violent media.

That is, of course, assuming that Truth Social’s users are interested in following the rules and the site is interested in enforcing them. Nunes told Fox that Truth Social will be “open for all ideas, all political debate from the left to the right,” and dedicated to “the free flow of debate and ideas all over the globe, so that people can learn from one another and debate with one another.” If the recent history of MAGA-themed social media apps is any indication, it seems more likely Truth Social will become an echo chamber trawled by grifters for gullible conservatives easily separated from their wallets, but hey.

Nunes has previously been a proponent of a BS argument popular among conservatives that social media sites might not be protected from lawsuits under Section 230 if they delete political content. The logic goes that when they selectively delete some viewpoints and not others, they cease to be a platform and instead become a publisher akin to a newspaper op-ed page. That’s just not how the law works—it applies broadly and doesn’t make any such distinctions. The argument always seemed more like a pretext for Trump and other GOP politicians to label sites they like as Section 230-protected platforms and sites they don’t as legally vulnerable publishers.

Now that he’s the CEO of a tech venture, Nunes is changing his tune somewhat (though with care to specify that Truth Social and its auto-moderating bots are definitely a platform, not a publisher).

“It is the law of the land. Clearly, in the past, I’d express my frustration with it—mainly, at what point does a website or a tech company become a publisher?” Nunes told Fox. “... The bottom line is that any changes that would be made to Section 230 in the future, we’re not at all worried about because we’re not going to be in that kind of business.”

Interestingly for a site that considers itself to be a platform with no involvement in editorial content, Truth Social is picking and choosing which internet celebrities to court for its upcoming launch. Axios reported on Tuesday that Truth Social’s “VIP” department is reaching out to influencers asking if they would like to “reserve” their “preferred username for when we launch in late February/early March.”

Glenn Kirschner, who spent 24 years as a prosecutor in the District of Columbia’s U.S. attorney’s office, told MSNBC’s Joy Reid that Trump may have put himself into a “danger zone” by taking crates of White House documents to his Florida home and reportedly tearing, shredding and destroying others.

It’s not because of the Presidential Records Act, which Kirschner called “largely toothless,” but rather a closely related law that does have some fangs: 18 U.S. Code § 2071, which prohibits concealing, removing or mutilating official records.

“Not only is that a 3-year federal felony, but importantly anybody who is convicted under that statute is prohibited from holding federal office,” he said.

Trump Memoir Panned as the Product of a ‘Wandering Mind’ Consumed With ‘Self-Sabotaging Bitterness’

Donald Trump shouldn’t expect a bump in sales of his “Our Journey Together” memoir that he is currently hawking in emails and at his rallies after Washington Post book critic Ron Charles took a torch to it in a recent book review.

According to Charles, the “$74.99, plus shipping” coffee table book published by Winning Team Publishing, run by Don Trump Jr and former campaign aide Sergio Gor, was supposed to have been available for Christmas but was delayed and no one really missed anything important.

As he notes, it loaded with photos from Trump’s only term as president with some highlighted by his “Sharpie scrawl” for captions. It is also loaded with bitter recriminations and ugly comments lodged against his enemies, real and perceived.

Pointing out, “It’s remarkable how effectively this presentation captures Trump’s wandering mind and self-sabotaging bitterness,” Charles notes that a picture of Trump with the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and his wife Cindy is accompanied by a caption reading, “John McCain visited me in the White House, asking for a job for his wife. I am smiling, but I didn’t like him even a little bit.”

Under a photo of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Trump, wrote, “Mark Zuckerberg would come to the White House and kiss my ass,” while a photo of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) negotiating with the former president led Trump to write, “f—ing CRAZY – hence the name Crazy Nancy!”

According to Charles, “In short, this is a memoir spun from the thin gruel of musty propaganda and cherished grudges. Turning these pages is like watching an old man dust his Hummel figurines and whine about the neighbors.”

“Appropriately, his nominations of Supreme Court justices are highlighted, but for some reason, the book includes four pages of Japanese sumo wrestlers, a nod to Trump bankrolling the United States President’s Cup, awarded to ‘the number one sumo wrestler in the world,'” the critic reported. “The omissions elsewhere are breathtaking. Trump says little about his two impeachments, except for a photo of him holding up a copy of The Washington Post with the headline ‘Trump acquitted.’ The deaths of 400,000 Americans from covid during his administration goes unmentioned, aside from noting that he enjoyed ‘a quick recovery’ after he caught the virus.”

“What’s most striking, though, is the book’s sterility, its determined lack of intimacy. Although many photos feature his family, the majority of pictures appear to have been drawn from official ceremonies, public appearances and work duties,” Charles observed. “Only a handful of photos across more than 300 pages show Trump without a tie. He notes a celebration of his birthday by showing a full-page photo of the official dinner menu. Trump closes the book with three double-spreads in a row of large crowds of fans. The last photo is a close-up of Trump alone, looking solemnly to the side. Then there’s a Sharpie note: ‘America, our journey continues. Together we will take our country back. We will WIN!'”

I've been commenting for a long time now that the old guard Republicans/Never Trumpers refuse to acknowledge the role they played in creating Trump. Well, here's one that agrees with me. You may be surprised to find out who it is.

I say repeatedly, and I mean it, I'm responsible for Trump. Stuart Stevens is responsible. Jonah Goldberg is responsible. Bill Kristol is responsible. Jeb Bush, John McCain, Sean Hannity, every fucking Republican and conservative, I don't give a damn if you're a never-Trumper. We all created the conditions for this guy to come along in 2015.

All of these "principled conservatives" and never-Trumpers and establishment people, their base had been telling them for years what they were scared and pissed off about. But the party did nothing about it. People like Newt Gingrich riled them up. And then the Tea Party people like me, we came along and we riled them up. Trump and this moment were always waiting to happen, because the party ignored their base for years instead of sitting the base down, educating them and teaching them that 1953 is never coming back.

DWAC stock rises (again) as Trump’s Twitter clone prepares for launch

After one year in the wilderness, former President Donald Trump is readying himself for a return to social media. It seems he’s posted his first message on Truth Social, the app that his new company Trump Media and Technology Group is creating after a merger with a SPAC called Digital World Acquisition Corp.

Seems is the key word here because the beta-mode app isn’t technically public yet, so people can’t see it for themselves. The post was revealed via a slightly pixelated screenshot that Donald Trump Jr. shared with the world by posting it, perhaps “un-self-awarely,” on both Twitter and Instagram:

“Get ready! Your favorite President will see you soon,” Trump’s message reads.

The new app purportedly launches on Monday—Presidents Day—if its Apple App Store listing is to be believed. (Devin Nunes, who left Congress to become CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group, previously stated the site would launch in late March.)

Whatever the case, the App Store listing is the latest peek at the app’s design and attitude, and the theme is pretty clear: The user interface is very Twitter-esque, while the atmosphere is mercilessly anti-Twitter. In screenshots teasing what the app looks like, Truth Social’s App Store listing mocks Jack Dorsey in almost every single image. They show the app being used by someone named “Jack’s Beard.” (Handle: @jack. Bio: “I’m just a guy trying to make it in this big world!”)

Another image gives us a look at @Jack’s feed, where we see a post by @TRUTHSocial that reads: “This week has been amazing. We’re working so hard to make sure that everyone has a voice . . . Cancel the cancel culture!” (Curiously, @TRUTHSocial’s post has been heavily ratioed by the platform’s users in this scenario it concocted—the post has 12,392 replies, but just 8,921 likes and 4,722 “re-Truths,” the term the app has landed on for retweets.)

There’s also a pretend DM exchange between @jack and @Jane, an apparent employee of his whom he instructs to delete a user’s account. “Hey @Jane, can you please have our moderation team take down that account and its posts?” he asks. “@Jack are you sure you want to do that?” the employee responds. “I mean it’s a pretty big deal censoring that content. Kinda an overreach . . . right?” To this, Jack’s Beard then replies, “JUST TAKE IT DOWN! ????”

Meanwhile, an image of Trump’s actual Truth Social page was shared by Liz Willis, of Right Side Broadcasting Network, the media company best-known for livestreaming all of Trump’s rallies on YouTube. Willis posted an image that, if you aren’t careful, looks like Trump’s old Twitter account reincarnated. It has the same profile picture, handle, and bio description. One standout difference: His profile looks to have been verified using a red check mark, instead of a blue one.

News of Trump’s inaugural post caused Digital World Acquisition Corp. stock to climb by 5% in premarket trading, implying a gain on its previous market valuation of at least a couple billion dollars. The company trades under the ticker DWAC. Financial news outlets like the Wall Street Journal have called this “a remarkable figure,” considering nobody knows jack (so to speak) about this company, even after its SEC filing—except that it plans to launch a new site that features Trump very prominently.
