Tulsi Gabbard’s CPAC Speech

She talks about the first amendment and how important it is for us to hold the government accountable for the trampling of our rights. She took a more libertarian stance, but sounded like a Democrat straight out of the Bush era. For some people to think she’s a Russian asset or whatever tells me they’ve gone too far left and buy into the bullshit propaganda from the left. This speech brought me to tears twice. Why people like this aren’t the ones in power instead of the current crop of people that belong in an assisted living facility is beyond me.

I can see that speech was intended to boost her bona fides with Fox News. On the whole, it’s a bunch of Republican stuff we’ve already heard before. Still obsessed with Hillary, Big Tech, and the potential for domestic terrorists to be caught. No thanks, I’ll continue to side with the good guys.

Do you think the Republicans burning books and trying to ban race-related topics in schools give a shit about the first amendment? They don't. They only care about protecting hate speech, because that kind of speech appeals to an important part of their base. Remember when twitter tried to use an algorithm to flag hate speech, but it flagged too many Republican politicians as well? That wasn't an accident.

You give someone a chance a few times, which I did with FF, and then you learn that you cannot mother them into being who you wish they were. In some honesty I do not blame FF for not giving into the idea that if he just conforms people will be his friend around here. That is only going to last until you have an opinion beyond what the group wants. Well, I respect her if she wants to approach diverse audiences, because more politicians should.

She's correct that the establishment and the Left are not interested in heterodox ideas and quick to label people as bigots etc. if they question anything. But the exact way she describes this is off-target. It's not the Biden administration that's dampening free speech; this is a broader cultural problem.

Railing against "big government" -- this is just classic Republican nonsense. How does she square this sentiment with her support for Medicare for All (as of 2020)?

I hear a lot of whining about "rights" but not a single practical solution to the great many problems America faces.

Does she want to be a true centrist, with alternative, nuanced ideas? Or just she just want to sell out to Team Red? Seems more the latter.

I think she was clearly calling for people to hold politicians’ feet to the fire and implied that we should repeal the Patriot Act and the FISA courts as well as getting rid of the security alphabet agencies like the CIA, NSA, and FBI and the spying on Americans that Snowden exposed.
