I am reporting this post because Worfdforge poster Dayton3 has flamed reputable Wordforge poster Ten Lubak. Wikipedia defines flaming as a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity. In this post, member Dayton3 has used a hostile and insulting profanity directed towards Ten Lubak, which is exactly the definition of flaming. Per the rules and guidelines of internet forum Wordforge.net, flaming should be restricted to the Red Room. As such, I recommend that user Dayton3 be charged with a warning for committing a flame outside of the Red Room. Dayton's statement, "Fuck you" qualifies as such a flame per the general definition of flaming.

I trust the Wordforge staff will rectify this untoward statement towards reputable Wordforge poster Ten Lubak adequately, so that relevant discussion regarding the new Star Trek movie will continue in the absence of statements from individuals on the spectrum.

The link to said internet forum Wordforge post is as follows:

Trolling is also not supposed to happen outside the Red Room, and Ten Lubak's comment to Dayton is a pretty clear example of that. I'd say a friendly to both of them is about all the exchange warrants.

He didn't report the post, just started this thread.

    Also, what @tafkats said.

Everybody should chill out in Media Central, or warnings will be given.

Please do not troll my Help Desk thread or I will have to report your post to the staff. A troll is one who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion, often for their own amusement [per Wikipedia].

Why do you repeatedly say this?

    reputable Wordforge poster Ten Lubak

What makes Ten Lubak better than anyone else?

Nothing I suspect as apparently the moderators consider him guilty of trolling...........

Both of these are obvious troll posts before the last one that goaded a response out of Dayton 3.

It's an opinion, but I wouldn't consider it to be trolling. Fans of every stripe either love/hate/can't decide things about the movie, and it's funny to watch people completely meltdown over a 90 second trailer. That said, I addressed the sniping in that thread, and I hope it will stop.

So you don't see it as a comment made entirely to get a response out of the person it was directed at? :garamet: I have a feeling this view has a lot more to do with who it's directed at than anything else. Flip who said what around, and I have little doubt you'd have come down on Dayton.

Nope, not a troll. Definitely a flippant comment, but not a troll. If we defined trolling that loosely, everyone on this board would have warnings. Being sarcastic and dismissive isn't against the rules.

Are you being willfully obtuse? :wtf: Ten Lubak's comments were clearly trolls meant to goad Dayton into responding. And posting trolls in Media Central is against the posted rules of the forum.

I suspect that there is an element of what you say to it, but that is nonetheless speculation and pointing out a rule breach isn't trolling. Dayton gets defended when things are unfair against him. It follows that when he breaks the rules he should equally be called on it. Saying "fuck you" to someone in Media Central is against the rules, and is it really credible that a member of some nearly 13 years standing somehow still doesn't know that? Come on. Be realistic.

I get what you are saying, but so much of it has to do with divining intent. I could, for example, point the finger at you for your comment about being willfully obtuse. There are certainly forums where that might be considered a flame. This isn't one of them, because we see that as just a conversational style. Luback's comment falls in to the same category.

This. Context matters in a big way, and since I hate issuing warnings anyway, I take extra caution when discerning whether or not something is intended as a troll. See, the bad thing about trolling is that it so subjective. You may hate Star Trek, I may love Star Trek, and I may say "Star Trek is a great franchise, much better than Star Wars IMO" and you may see it as trolling because the idea offends you. Someone like me, or @gul, @Anna, and so on, has to divine the meaning underneath.

 It's pretty obvious to me that the only "context" that matters to the three of you is in who the comments were directed against. There is no context that places the comments I highlighted as on topic for a movie discussion. It was obviously meant to be an insulting comment that was directed at a specific person. It was also obviously meant to get a rise out of Dayton, which makes it the very definition of a troll. Gul, you can claim that my comment about being "willfully obtuse" is a troll or a flame, but this actually is where context comes in, because the context is that I'm criticizing the moderation of this board and specifically the attitude this one particular admin has about this topic, which is the entire purpose of this forum. And frankly, all of you come off as ignoring this very cut and dry example of trolling outside of the Red Room, to the point you'll just claim it's not trolling, simply because of who's involved. So yes, you are all being willfully obtuse over this matter, and I'm calling you out on it. :bailey:

We disagree that it is trolling, therefore, nothing to ignore. You can't simply point the finger, offer an opinion, then expect us to warn somebody as a result.

Well there are two completely different meaning of "troll." There's trailing a line to catch a fish, which comes from a French word, and there's the ugly little creature that lives under a bridge, which comes from Scandinavian (North Germanic) languages, primarily Norwegian.

And how many times have we ignored or otherwise not warned yourself for equally "trollish" comments towards those that enjoy JJ Abrams Trek in the past?

We can nitpick every perceived slight, but eventually, we'd become the Enterprise forum where half the show can't be discussed in any meaningful way thanks to asshole posters who no longer post there.

I've had Flashlight call me an idiot in Media Central FWIW, and I flat out ignored him. I find him to be a far bigger detriment than Dayton, and I'm certainly not looking for ways to boot his ass out. If you don't believe me or don't think better of me after all the tI'm we've known each othet, there's nothing else I can say or do at this point.
