It is interesting that he seems to think that the idea of white privilege implies no white has ever been treated badly by a black. That's simply untrue, and I have no doubt of what Frontline has to say about his own experiences. The question regards not the singular incidents, though, but whether there is also a systemic issue of power imbalance.

My theory is that if you believe in the validity of what you're saying, you believe that it remains valid in more than a single instance. Apparently, you don't.

Then no individual should ever again hear about their "privilege", since you've as good as conceded that it has nothing to do with individual cases.

You know, I think concepts like racial and sexual privilege are utter nonsense. Society is far too complex for it to be viewed in such a manner. Many individuals cross so many social groups that they can't be bookended into a particular section of society, be it for reasons of social standing, connections, political affiliation, class, wealth, nationality or half a dozen other factors. The idea that the white man carries and automatic privilege because of the fact that he is a white man is a nonsense as it suggests that the privilege is an automatic benefit. Well, as someone who was born into a working class background and has had to graft for anything he has thus far I have seen very little evidence of this so called privilege and I have had to compete with women and ethnic minorities throughout my professional career. It is for this reason that I am a staunch supporter of a meritocracy rather than abhorrent ideas like quotas, which only serve to further promote division and resentment - which, by it's very nature, is contrary to any effort to educate people about human equality.

But, having said all that, I do absolutely agree with @Vallejo that gender or racial based humour can help to reinforce stereotypes. I think there has been a concerted effort in this thread by people who enjoy such humour to excuse their own guilt, whether it be a conscious guilt or otherwise, but the fact is that stereotype based humour is most often rooted in a negative stereotype rather than a positive one. Therefore not only can it subconsciously influence one's view of race or gender, but it helps to give life to those stereotypes and enables them to continue. I think it's a crass and lazy response to that problem to dismiss anyone who discusses it as lacking a sense of humour.

As for what actually constitutes an unfair racial or sexual stereotype (that is to say those comments that can cause harm and frustrate social equality), and what is more a parody of society's attitudes, well that to me is a whole separate subject and one where it is difficult to determine where the invisible line is.

This distinction has not been made in this thread before now. In the preceding posts I was inclined to go with Castle, as there is discrimination everywhere and I really don't see color so much as trash. So I think of discrimination on an individual basis not a group basis.

However I think this distinction is important as to how we communicate across this country. You see it as a group thing where as in the Southern states it tends to be more of an individual thing anymore. (Your mileage may vary, but Texas and Oklahoma are my knowledge base)
