I get the impression that posters here are, shall we say, not exactly apathetic about politics. There are some that don't vote, but they usually argue fairly forcefully about why they don't. So, Brits, who's heading to the polling station today? I've included a 'no election here' option, because I'm not sure all councils have votes...
No elections in London today. However, I always excercise my right to vote at all levels. I think it's a duty as a responsible citizen and the right thing to do if I'm going to use my right to question those elected.
All I know is it's May 3, 2007 and the day of the week is irrelevant when you spend 7 days a week studying and have tests every couple of days. It's not like I have a weekend so what's the point of caring what the "day" is. As long as I know the date and time I'm fine.
Hmm... The ward in which I live is usually a fairly close fight between a couple of Independents and the Lib Dems, with the Tories in a reasonable third. So I wasn't surprised to get election leaflets from those three, with Labour concentrating on wards where it actually has a chance. But I was astonished to get into the polling booth and discover that the Greens and UKIP were standing! We hadn't heard a word from either throughout the campaign. Politicians have got a bloody cheek accusing the public of apathy if they can't even be bothered to let us know they're standing...
Is there no elections in London? I was wondering why I hadn't received my polling card, considering all the election fuss that's going on. I wouldn't know who to vote for anyway. I usually go with the Greens but I have a feeling they will back the ludicrous biweekly rubbish collection idea the government is considering, so that's them off my favourites list.
I do vote in Liechtenstein, don't in Switzerland (even though I'm probably better informed about Swiss politics). Only had a chance to do so twice so far (once about issues - direct democracy FTW - where I made up my mind about half an hour before actually going to vote and once for a community council thingie (only put in 4 names out of 12 possible - the rest went to the Social Democrats/Greens )). So yeah, I agree with El Chup. It's a civic duty.
I'm conflicted. On the one hand, there's no voting going on here, so I'm inclined to vote no. On the other hand, I'd be voting in this poll if I voted no, so I'd then be lying.
Got to admit, I was sorely tempted - they're far closer to my political beliefs than any other party. But, as I said earlier, the battle here is between the Independents and the Lib Dems. And the Independents usually support the Tories... We're NOC ATM, and I'd far rather see the Lib Dems take the balance than the Tories... O course, if we had PR, I could vote with my conscience.
Seriously. it's almost as deep red as Newcastle and Manchester, and has been for over 30 years. I'm in one of the areas whose vote counters couldn't be arsed to count the votes last night though. They were probably blowing their fraudulent benefit cheques at the pub.
couldn't vote even if i'd wanted to, picked up a short term contract which meant i wasn't anywhere near my ward between 6am and 9pm plus, its council elections, and unless you have a really, really bad council theres little point in voting as they're increasingly little other than puppets on a string heading right back to westminster. a lot of the money going there way is already ringfenced by the dictates of central government, and with the remained its little to do with what party the person represents than the party itself. which is another reason i don't like council elections, along with the fact councillors are little other than glorified nosey neighbours, people will vote labour/tory/libdem/whatever due to party affiliation rather than the ability of the person standing. which is retarded as you could've had a fucking reprobate continually voted in on the basis they wear a red rose, whilst a more superior candidate ignored due to being blue.
Of course i did. Labour in my constituency vote and green in the list vote. At the moment though the SNP's are getting uncomfortably close.........
I have to say that I had a giggle when I saw that so many Americans voted for opinion 2 when the thread is clearly directed at Brits
3 behind and 39 to go i'd like to see the SNP win and scotland get independance - you jocks take so much more pride in your country than we do. although wether scotland could survive without without the english subsidy is a question the SNP needs to answer with some hard figures.
with the ballot debacle in scotland, it can at least start advertising itself as "scotland: the florida of the UK" in tourism adverts
Scotland won't go independant when they realise they'll have to have their own military. All their soldier candidates are too busy in the pub!
Opinion polls suggest that if there was a referendum in Scotland, around 20% would vote for independence. So, unless I'm missing something, the SNP would be shooting themselves in the foot by holding one. The other thing to note is that if there was independence, it's leave the Tories in a very dominant position in Westminister.
