Well, to be fair, when there's a fire on the plane you would need more oxygen.

There's not much oxygen up there...so opening the windows may snuff out the fire (and the passengers) while tearing the plane apart.

It's even dumber in context: there was a fire on his wife's plane, and here he is thinking it's a good idea to introduce more oxygen into the cabin.

I'm sure if the captain thought his passengers were in danger of asphyxiating, he would have deployed the oxygen masks.
