September - October - November - December - January? I had a dream that I "sealed the deal" in January. Will it happen sooner? Will it happen Wednesday (the next day I hunt)? Discuss!
Whitetails are expanding their range and numbers every year. And you have some big agriculture fed deer out where you are! You might like it. Of course Forbin has the honey-hole of bowhunting - except Lyme Disease is running rampant there.
PARODY? As in "when will oldfella bag a queer?" Anyway, yes bowhunting exclusively. I don't have a shotgun (slugs only) or a truck to get me into the gun hunting areas with dirt roads anyway, so I'm just sticking to the archery only areas in the populated areas here on the main post where it's park the car and walk in hunting. I'm going this evening after work, and again Friday evening and all day Saturday + Sunday.
Have you thought of exploring local public lands? As for the shotgun, never got my head wrapped around hunting deer or hog with a shotgun. Just use a rifle.
Not allowed to use a rifle on Fort Gordon - shotguns with slugs only which is no big deal because most shots are pretty short anyway. There is one WMA area open to archery only about 15 minutes from home. It's small but still VERY hard to pattern so few deer get taken from it. That said once gun season opens I think more deer will use it as a sanctuary against all the hunters in the surrounding woods and farms. My neighborhood actually has plenty of deer but just getting permission to hunt is a thing of the past. Now that deer hunting is a big industry everything is LEASED! If hunters are willing to lease your land, why let someone hunt for free? So basically hunting on post is my best option. Plus I know the areas I hunt like the back of my hand. Now it's just waiting for one of the deer to make a mistake and not be zigging while I'm zagging. With 34 deer per square mile around here, statistically at least 1 deer has go full retard while I'm in the woods.
Thanks. It's for those reasons that I do prefer to hunt leases. But shit it's expensive down here. I gotta go almost 3 hours to pay less than $1,000 a year.
