IIRC, Nick Meyer before directing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan wanted to drastically redesign the Enterprise to make it more "Star Warsy" but after getting lots of negative feedback he said "There are just some things you don't mess with".

That said, I wouldn't really have minded if J.J. Abrams team had redesigned the original Enterprise.

But the thing is, they didn't really redesign it. They just tampered with the existing features and made them all worse visually.

Chad (and one or two others) love to bitch and moan about the "popsickle stick" engine pylons of the original Enterprise, but by any objective standard the weird curved pylons on the Abramsprise are certainly no better and arguably MUCH, MUCH worse.

Likewise having overall larger more detailed warp engines might've been a good idea, but the "hair dryer" ones that made it onto the big screen add nothing visually.

Finally, if they wanted to make the Abramsprise more impressive than the original, why did they adopt the ridiculous "pew! pew! pew!" sound effects for the photon torpedos? It sounds like Bernadette from "The Big Bang Theory" playing the Star Wars online game with the guys and making up her own blaster sound effects.

If they want big and impressive why not go with a serious "energy shriek" when launched?

To me JJAbrams biggest mistakes in Abramstrek is that they messed with stuff they shouldn't have. And left in place things they should've messed with from the beginning.

Okay. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, too.

He clearly understands the negative reaction because he shares it. And that gives me hope that there's a lot more to this film than what we glimpsed.

I thought the engineering spaces came from the Willy Wonka factory.

I would wager that I could take the original series Enterprise and with the right special effects, sound effects, and editing and replace ALL of the Abramsprise footage and have the 2009 movie be just as exciting.

If I ever get ahold of the equipment that Ed629 has outlined that I need to do so (estimated cost was around 6,000 dollars) then I'm going to prove it.

You won't be able to just sit down and start creating new footage. At least 1/2 the movie shows the Abramprise, and it still takes a team of dozens or even a few hundred to create the footage over months of time.

My goal is within 10 years. Say around 2026 for those of you math challenged. I suspect computer technology and my understanding of it will improve in that time.

Also if I'm going to use the original series Constitutional class ship outright I could excise the basic ship footage from existing OS episodes (original or upgraded) and then work on effects modification along with editing.

But thanks for your support Ed. You've given me much to consider.

Ummm.... it took you just about that amount of time to figure out how to post a link, and you still haven't mastered quotes. Rendering footage, and learning the processes needed to do so is vastly much, much more challenging.

Don't worry. There are also youtube videos that help explain it.

    But thanks for your concern.

It isn't concern, it's reality. I have the software to create the scenes, I've sat down and have played around with the software. Just to make a rough model, it took me several hours to do it. About an hour, hour and a half to create the skins/textures. Then another hour or so the create the model, a simple cylinder with a rounded top. Then 20 minutes to apply the textures, and then another 20 minutes to create lighting.

So around 3 hours for a simple model, with around 6 pieces and 20-25 surfaces. You're talking a models with hundreds of parts, surfaces in the tens of thousands of surfaces. Dozens of light sources, and hundreds of skins. For one model. One single simple model. You're talking 2-3 models, dozens of objects, hundreds or thousands of particles to create.

It took months for a large team to do so for Star Trek 09, translate that into one person and you're looking at decades. And there are not YouTube videos for particle synthesis, and how to recreate the physics of how the particles will react.

^I'll take your word for it Ed. You are the expert in such matters. Still, it is doable as you will surely admit.

Besides Ed. I've been looking into it. Some high schools have art and computer classes that do work that is similar to this.

Since you can see it movies, yes it is doable. Feasible, not for one person. I'm definitely not an expert in this, but I do know that what you're wanting to do is not possible for one person. You would essentially need to make it a full time job, for years.

Setting aside practical issues, I'm sure it would be just as exciting. But doesn't that kind of prove that the ship isn't what makes the film?

Yeah... but you still have to learn it. And the people who do create the work for movies, have been doing it for a long time, as a career, sometimes as long as 10-20 years. I'm only being realistic here, yes people have done so for their own fan produced Star Trek series. But no where near the level or complexity seen in modern movies, where the ships look as good or better than practical models.

Temporary situation. After all I have been hired much more often than I've been terminated. The odds are in my favor.

I don't think it would be all that hard because he doesn't have to make the model or anything, as tons of fans have already done that for their own productions. He'd just need to talk to some of them and download whatever software and models they were using, perhaps to help them on one of the projects they're working on.

Good point. There are a couple of high quality fan made sequences of the original Enterprise firing its forward phasers rapidly on Youtube already. And I wouldn't doubt that over the next few years there will be more.

In regards to Star Trek: Beyond I was hoping there would be some cool 23rd century land combat sequences. Something we've never seen before in ANY Trek production.

Those models will work for compositing the scenes, but are very low in detail. The Enterprise has has maybe a few hundred polygons in the surface. A realistic model will have tens of thousands. Unless he's happy with low res models, then he could use ready made ones. Those are free, high quality, highly detailed ones are not free.

Oh, that's just one set of models. There's apparently lots of them, such as the one at TrekMeshes.ch that lets you do this kind of thing.

And there's the Enterprise3Dproject.com and probably countless others.

A lot of shows don't have the geek fan base that would busy themselves generating such things, such as Orange is the New Black, where Janeway fans could build wire frame models of the prison, but don't.

ETA: About a decade ago I was using POV ray trace, which is an open source ray tracer that can make some fantastic images. Looks like it's still popular, and it's absolutely free.

I have to admit you're an incredibly lucky man. You have nothing to lose from this venture, and so much to gain. I think if you double your efforts and focus only on this, you could pull it off in 5 years instead of 10.

They were actually filmed in the Budweiser Brewery in Van Nuys, CA. I didn't envy the cast and crew working in that environment every day. I've been by that plant many times in my life, and the smell is horrible!
