Seems to me that there was only about a decade where I could have voted and you couldn't.

But, is changing 'man' to 'one' really causing anyone to miss out on the fun?

Paladin mentioned it was more 'poetic', and I suppose it does add a bit more 'drama'.

But all in all, if saying 'man' would turn some away where saying 'one' would bring more people in, is it really such a bad thing?

    It's poetic, not scientific, language.

Then let's change it to "human," even though it sounds clunky.

While we're at it, let's change it to "to go boldly," which is more grammatically correct.

    Or not.

Angels on the head of a pin, if you ask me.

Agreed. As is "to boldly go," which would make any English teacher cringe.

I'm still :bang: over Harve Bennett's use of "nourish" when he should have used "nurture," but that's just me...

And now you're switching back to the original argument. You're the one dancing here and I doubt you'd convince anyone you're an angel. ;)

Besides, your "let's change it to human" suggestion does NOT follow the point I made.

But I wonder if you really understand why he didn't want to go.

For example, I can't get into 60s Beach Boys music. Fun on the beach while people were getting lynched and hosed in southern streets. One group of people could relax and have a good ole time while others were damn near fighting for their lives.

Sisko felt it was 'real'. Cuz if they had really gone back in time he would not have been able to go in that casino.

Like myself, I would have no desire to go BACK in time as a black man.

I understand perfectly. The thing is: You and Sisko wouldn't be going back. I wouldn't want to go back either. But he could figure that out with a little help from his lady. This is all about going forward.

(Yes, except when it comes at the front of a sentence.)
My dictionary (well, dictionary.com :diacanu:) still has the following three definitions of man that indicate it is generic for all people:

Careful, now. Don't overplay the victim card. I'm this close to either (1) agreeing with you or (2) saying "meh, it doesn't matter." But suggesting that the word is somehow grossly unfair or a deep insult to all womanhood is going a little far. As the definitions above show, 'man' still has a generic connotation and it doesn't do to impugn those who still use it in that fashion.

I doubt Star Trek, of all things ,will side against gender neutrality in language.

    Straight down gender lines.

Ghoulie, Linda and Jenee (we assume female) all carry the torch for PC and all the guys get that man means mankind.

I don't care what they say as long as it doesn't suck.

With all this time travel shit I'm hearing though, it sounds like it will.

I actually like the new (well, as new as anything 20+ years old can be) for reasons that have nothing to do with PC.

I just think it sounds cooler and more mysterious.

As a guy I get that man means mankind, but it's not something I really see a need to get bent up over.

In fact if Star Trek was real, and you could go talk to Kirk I doubt he would give a shit about which word he used since it is obviously the spirit of the phrase that is important and not the exact words use.

edit: It's another example of one of the things that has worn out Trek over the past decade, people getting too caught up in "it was done this way once, it's obviously the only correct way!"

edit2: The point is that if they were editing the original episodes, then it would be stupidly pc, but they are not and so the exact wording of what is said (if indeed the speech is used) doesn't really matter so long as the message stays the same.

I think they WILL change it. And though I'd prefer them to keep it as 'where no man has gone before', if you think about it, Star Trek has ALWAYS been about PC-ness.

You had a black comm officer, a Jap, a Russian, and an alien all working side by side. If Gene Roddenberry had known about how gender equality would be a big issue today, I'm sure he would have wrote it as 'where no one has gone before'.

I prefer the original, but if they really want to keep the movie in the spirit of Star Trek, it'll be the second.

Add his inability to determine gender to his reading disability. Poor Sokar. So busy making sure his dick doesn't fall off, he can't think of anything else.

"No one" makes no sense in the ST realm. The milky way is a lively place for those characters. No matter where humanity or the Federation goes, chances are good that someone has been there before.

Which is exactly what I said a few posts up. Annoying how often you and I end up agreeing on something, innit?
