18 people went by without stopping to help the girl, who is in critical condition. Run over twice. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

I heard on the radio that the reason he drove over her (after hitting her) was that he thought he'd get in more trouble if she were left alive than killing her, so he ran her all the way over. This is not confirmed.

Anyway, if people didn't want to physically help her, then why didn't they at least urgently find someone with a phone to call for medical help? It could be old fashioned Asian values:

once in Korea a few of my Army buds were on the subway. Some woman collapsed and NOT ONE KOREAN DID SHIT. So my buds quickly attended to her, made sure she wasn't actually dying and helped her into a seat.

Then, they bitched out the other riders. Later (at work) the Korean soldiers we serve with said that in their culture it's not proper to interact with people until you are introduced to them (or otherwise know who they are) and know their role and rank in society. That's the same reason they bump into Americans on the street and treat you as if you are literally invisible - because you are not one of them and they don't acknowledge your presence. Anectdotal? Hey, the Koreans ought to know their own people better than I do.

Yup. I was going to make this very point. This isn't a Chinese issue so much as the world seems to be becoming an increasingly selfish place.

It does happen here, but not usually with a little child. People tend to help little kids more. I am in EMS, and I can tell you when a call comes in for a little kid, everyone moves faster, is more emotional and puts forth greater effort. When you get on scene there are many people around trying to help, as opposed to injured adults where you have a few standing around watching.

Yes, but wouldn't you say that people who work in EMS might have a different perspective on the issue than some of the dirtbags that inhabit the world, including certain districts of the US?

Sorry, but the bit you put in bold is irrelevant as those who are not minded to stay and help wouldn't still be hanginhg around by the time the ambulance arrived would they?

I think the presumption seems to be here that if some people stay and help then that applies to everyone, which is not really the case is it?

That's not really true in the general public anymore.

Now people are SO afraid of being charged or something, especially in large cities I have noticed that when something happens people will just stand to the side. Quite often they won't even so much as call 911!

Out here you would get shot for that but in the cities 'mind your own business' is turning into a way of life.

I am on a lot of parenting boards and it has been often a child has gotten hurt and nobody has even gone to see if they were ok.

^ Kids tend to be the exception to that rule. I've seen it over and over. When it's a little kid, people's maternal and paternal instincts override their caution and detachment and they get involved. It's not universal, but it is very common.

Girls are not valued in China. There are tales of parents during floods rescuing the boys and letting the girls drown.

I'm all for bringing over all the young chinese girls to America where they can flourish.

Wow, what a cold bunch of people and over a billion of them at that. Since they are killing off the little girls, they are going to have a situation at some point. There won't be enough women to go around and there will be war over there and we need to stay the fuck out of it and let that fire burn.

God, you really are a generalising goober aren't you?

"Right, I have read this article and because they are not good white American Christians this must be evidence of them all being savage child murderers". :dayton:

You know, I was giving you some leeway because I thought a lot of the crap you post was due to the drink problem, but it's sounding more like you are justm ultimately, a fucking idiot.

Fuck litigation. I wouldn't let a child (or any innocent person) die because of some asshole wanting to sue me for giving a damn.

Not to encourage EP's drooling stupidity, but in this case, he's not far off the mark. Because of the whole One Child Per Family tax, people want boys a lot more than girls. I don't know if elective abortion is legal in China, or as rampant as it is in India, but it wouldn't surprise me. And in another few generations, the girl shortage is gonna be a problem for men seeking Chinese wives.

I was referring to the generalisation that all Chinese are evil and cold hearted, which is utter nonsense.

A culture that aborts as many children as China does is bound to not care about children.

    Legal, hell. Sometimes it's mandatory.

(Which I guess technically makes it not elective, but that's another matter.)

Technically, sex-selective abortion is illegal, but it's pretty hard to enforce.
