Why Do We Still Give A Crap About Princess Diana?

This morning, I'm surfing the news channels trying to see what has been going on in the world since I've been asleep and all I can find is live coverage of Princess Diana's memorial service. The woman has been rotting in the ground for 10 freaking years! Why do we still care? News anchors keep going on about Diana's legacy and how much the world loved her. I ask you, good people of Wordforge, what the hell did this woman ever do to merit this sort of coverage in the U.S.? Why are we lauding a foreign figurehead who did little more than live in luxury, fuck some greasy Arab department store heir and lend her name to a few pet causes? What real impact did this woman have on the world? Why are we bothering with her?

 

We don't. And I have no idea why the press do. It's just easy to report on, I suppose.

I don't know anyone who put her on the pedestal that the media do.

 

Celebrities who die in their prime (or close to their prime) tend to get this treatment.

If she had died in a car accident when she was 60 years old, put on some serious pounds, and hair turned gray.....few people would've cared.

 

But they're trying to turn her into some kind of role model. huh?

 

The British have to read all about Princess Diana----the Americans get headlines about Britney, Lindsey, Paris, Nicole, Brad and Angelina, Tom and Katie, etc.

I don't know which is worse.

 

People have an innate desire for the celebrities they idolize to be more than what they really are.

 

Few celebrities who died in their prime got this sort of treatment 10 years after their death.

 

Few, but I believe ones like Elvis did. Though he was hardly in his prime. Being in his 40s, he at least died reasonably young.

 

That's what I find truly funny about this coverage. The news anchors tend to wax poetic about Diana's legacy, but, it seems that the best they can come up with is that "she put a human face on the Monarchy", "showed Prince Charles how to be a father", "visiting sick children in hospitals" etc. Nobody has yet mentioned any one thing she has directly done to make the world a better place.

 

Probably true about Elvis, though I don't remember. At least Elvis gave us some music to rock to.

 

Elvis blended a number of kinds of music pretty decently.

After all, he was diverse enough to end up in the Rock & Roll, Country, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.

Did anyone know that in the United States, we have more than 3,000 "Halls of Fame"?

 

Dayton, ever think things like that are signs that we've got wayyy too much money and wayyy too much time on our hands?

 

Most singers don't write their own music.

It hardly demeans their talents. They are the ones that still have to perform and whose careers will rise and fall on how well they do it.

Do we demean quarterbacks because they don't call their own plays?

Or doctors because they don't invent the life saving procedures they use?

 

Anyone who ever had the honour of laying eyes on her in real life would not have to ask that question. Words, pictures and videos could never explain it.

Never did give a crap about Di, but I must admit to quiet amusement at the sight of Jug Ears yet again demonstrating his sure grasp of public relations...
I sometimes wonder if the real Prince Charles was replaced years ago with a surgically-altered lookalike hardcore republican with the job of making the royals so unpopular we finally kick them into touch.

 

I'm just tired of hearing about the "tragedy". They were drunk and speeding in a car. That's not tragic, it's stupid.

 

I didn't care about her ten years ago and I care even less now.

 

One thing Diana did was pull an "Angelina Jolie".

That is, become an advocate and supporter of worthy causes (i.e. landmine elimination) in order to take the attention away from a chaotic personal life.

 

Never did give a shit. Famous people are not more special or noteworthy to me.

 

Why did some people ever give a crap in the first place? She was a nobody.

[EDIT - By nobody I mean nobody any more special than everyone else, which is true for all so-called celebrities.]

 

All this mourning over Di really sickened me. You get some people who wouldn't shed a tear if a family member passed away but you had all these muppets bawling their eyes out for a woman they didn't even know.

 

One of my colleagues went to lay flowers and came into the office the following day to tell us all about how it had affected her and how upset she'd been...
She regretted it pretty quickly...

 

I saw her in real life, still didn't think much of her. IMO she came across as quite manipulative in the latter part of her life.

 

She did make the royals look like assholes though. Not that they need much help.

I'm sure the Queen was breathing a sigh of relief when she died.
