Punishable by a substantial fine of course. Say $500 for every person who learns the unreleased personal information of someone via the direct efforts of someone else. The fine of course being paid by the person who releases the information. Note of course that elected officials and people deemed to be "public figures" could not be protected by such laws.

With the whole "Tracker" thing, Dayton is really trying to cover up his long history of Internet idiocy.

If a person chooses to reveal information about themselves online they would always of course be free to do so.

It seems to me that simply revealing information would be protected by the first amendment. It would have to be accompanied by some threat or exhortation to commit a crime, or the information would have to have been illegally obtained.

Can we define "doxxing" for the purposes of the discussion?

That isn't something a random person on the internet has any right to decide.

Right, which is why a threat or exhortation to commit a crime would be illegal. Those limits are already established. You are proposing new limits that would probably be overturned by the courts.

    Define what identity is.

If a service puts itself forward as one that protects anonymity than certainly it should be contractually expected to uphold that, but what grounds are there for forcing people to not speculate on identity?
If someone walks out in public wearing a mask should it be illegal for some else to say who they are?

    Dictionary definition:

"To search for and publish private or identifying information about (a particular individual) on the Internet, typically with malicious intent."

But unless they show up on your doorstep with a weapon, you as a private citizen have no defense. Unless you're, say, David Letterman, and a stalker woman is prowling in your yard, in which case you can have her arrested.

That wouldn't work as a legal definition though. For a start it would include a situation whereby I confessed in here to a crime and you act on that by contacting the authorities with whatever information you could glean.

Can't find it now, but there was a story earlier about a grandmother who called police when she heard her grandson on the phone loading a weapon and talking about "taking out some people." Slaughter stopped. Of course, if he'd overheard her she might have been the first casualty, but someone's got to step up and say "Not on my watch!"

Indeed, but by the definition given, she'd have "doxxed" him, hence committed an offence.

What if something leaks to the whole world?
For 7 billion people on Earth, that's 3.5 trillion dollars.
How the fuck are they supposed to pay that?
Or, does it just switch over to some kind of permanent indentured servitude?
Or, does it become the death penalty?

Without a doubt, this topic is related to Joaquin Castro's decision to "reveal" a public list of the maximum Trump donors in San Antonio. Of course conservatives want to fake outrage and insult and make this a crime. But let me ask you this... Does anyone here know who George Soros is? Why he's famous? How do we know that?

All of this twisted logic goes back to that corrupt Supreme Court decision in the Citizen's United case in 2010. Obama warned us that this decision would allow foreign governments to pour money into our elections and do it in a way that would remain hidden from the public and that's exactly what happened in 2016... and of course it benefited the Republican candidate... because they don't actually believe in any American ideals.

No, what we need is more transparency in our elections... not less. FULL DISCLOSURE, not none.

Joy Reid pointed out the NYT ran a story with a list of Clinton donors but now it's Trump the righties are all up in arms.

It’d be quite difficult to enforce, even harder to prosecute (prosecution would have to prove they didn’t find the info posted publicly somewhere, a very high bar), and might fall afoul of the 1st Amendment.

All threats arising out of doxxing should of course be treated facially and prosecuted to the fullest, as should any incitement, but incitement is similarly hard to prove. “Here’s her info, boys, you know what to do.” Incitement, or a call to a shaming and letter-writing campaign? Their defense lawyer will argue the latter.

Its quite a tough one. On the one hand, i am completley against the concept of Doxing. Generally it is dispicable. John Castle doxing El Chup and Gul as a classic example. He deserved a life ban and more for that.

On the other hand, and i make no bones about it. If by some quirk of fate my daughter was due to go to school and get dayton as a teacher, 100% i have his past history infront of the head teacher, the local authority and potentially the press.

So while iv got no interest in doxing Dayton or any other faceless internet persona, if suddenly they impacted upon my or my families life, then all bets are off.

I was thinking he went for an interview, and his posting history here and other places may have come up. So he might be trying to disassociate Dayton3 from Tracker. And he's also been posting less lately, which he's done before when school is getting ready to start.

This would make sense if Tracker were applying for a job, or if Tracker were planning something particularly daytonesque.
