Then, really, just what is your problem with Maher being called what he is, then?

A Christian organization speaking ill of a half-Jewish comedian. Not at all shocked.

Half Jewish? How does that work?

Calling him a comedian is quite stretch as well.

He constantly plays the victim card but refrains from date-raping underaged girls.

I'm not talking about his religion (he does not have a religion), I'm referring to his ethnicity (which is why I referred to his father as Irish, rather than Catholic). One can be ethnically Jewish but not practice Judaism.

Strictly speaking, a Jewish mother makes him a Jew. There's no "half."

No, b/c as Timmy points out 'Jew' can refer to a member of a race, an ethnicity, a religion, or a Nation.

You're only looking at the religious definition.

Correct on the first three, not on "nation." That would be Israeli. There are Israelis (precious few) who are not Jews, and Jews who are not Israelis.

Religious, cultural, and historical. If the mother is Jewish, the son is Jewish. Then you get to the qualifiers. Where did his mother's people come from? Her maiden name, Berman, suggests Germany or Austria (though it could also be Russia, Ukraine, then-Czechoslovakia, etc.), so she would be "a German Jew."

    Still no "halves." ;)

Ehh, I don't really think that's the case. If one were 3/4 of "x ethnicity" that person might identify primarily with that identity, but being 1/2 of an ethnicity doesn't come close to making that person fully that ethnicity.

Why is it you think he is fully ethnically Jewish? Does that particular ethnicity take precedence for some reason?

(It should be noted that he didn't even know his mother was Jewish until his mid-teens, and probably thought of his heritage as primarily Irish and possibly whatever Eastern European country/countries his mother's ancestors hailed from)

Y'know, I'd be more likely to believe in the sincerity of these complaints about Mahar's comments if they hadn't come years after he made them, and only then after Limbaugh found himself in hot water. Timing just seems weird, is all.

Anybody following Bill Maher's lead? Anybody thinking "Yeah he's got it all figured out!"

Of course not. Millions are spent on marketing every day, Mr. Maher donating one million is money well spent.

Call it tradition based in part on ancestry. Judaic law says a Jewish woman's children are Jewish. On that basis, a non-observant Jew can be accepted into a congregation without the need for conversion, whereas in some of the more orthodox sects, someone whose father is Jewish but whose mother is Gentile may actually have to undergo conversion in order to be accepted in the community.

Judaism is unusual (perhaps unique; I don't know of any other segment of humanity to which this applies...maybe there is, but I'm not aware of it) in that it can be based on ethnicity/genetics, religion, culture, or any combination thereof.

While Judaic law may classify him as fully Jewish, genetics would say otherwise. I think that there are many other ethnicities or cultures that would view someone as a full member of that ethnicity/culture based on having at least one parent from the group, but from an outside view it's not the case. (Ideally we would go by which group(s) the invididual chooses to identify with)

And to add to its uniqueness, Jewish nationalism is pretty much the only form of nationalism with its own word (Zionism).
