Interesting. I'd heard rumblings that MicroSquish was going to make the next version of Windows modular . . . you'd load the bits you needed to do what you wanted to do and nothing more. Avoiding the bloat of Vista.

I'm a MS fanboy but I can't see the widespread desire for all this touchscreen stuff.

Seriously...I spend a lot of my computer time trying to keep fingerprints OFF of my screen.

About 18 years ago, I worked for the touchscreen company (Elo, then Elographics) mentioned in the video. There were (and remain) some good applications for touchscreens: public kiosks, ATMs, and such. But way back then I couldn't come up with a good reason to want one on my PC...and I still can't.

All of the gimmickry shown in the video can be duplicated with existing software controls, without incurring the cost of a touchscreen. The multitouch functions (like spinning and zooming) are neat, but how are they going to make me more productive? I see lots of "kewlness," but nothing that makes me think touchscreens are going to be any more desirable in PCs now than they were in 1990...

Well, I'm a whore for touchscreens, so in a way, this is good news.

But hearing that they've chucked the MinWin kernel in favor of just an upgraded Vista is pretty sobering.

    EDIT - Ill-conceived rant removed.

As soon as the release the other day said "Evolutionary, not revolutionary," I knew we were going to be in for a big disappointment. Chucking the new kernel confirms my worst fears.

I imagine this is primarily for tablet PCs.

Yep. They promised a much smaller core.
    They lied.

Oh, they're probably just playing it safe after people bitched about completely inconsequential shit this last time.
