The guy was a recent convert who apparently became obnoxious trying to convert his coworkers to Islam, so they fired him.

He came back with a knife and started beheading, attacking the first people he saw. An off duty cop shot him.

The officer was a reserve officer not an off duty officer. Also he's the owner of the store.
