I like the Ent E because it looks like someone finally took a good look at the ship and said "let's get rid of these obvious weak spots where an enemy could separate the saucer/nacelles from the rest of the ship with a well-aimed blast or two..."
I'd love to accept that as an explanation -- I so would. Problem is, they also said, "Let's leave all these other vulnerable spots on the ship exposed so they're lit up like neon bullseyes."
Eh, I dunno. If the neck is the most heavily shielded and toughest part of the ship to penetrate due to armor, deflection mechanics design, etc. then it might be a good thing to give hostile aliens a target they try to hit by making it look like the most vulnerable part of the ship. Sorta like a boxer dropping their arm to set up a counterpunch. The nacelles sticking out like they do in all the ship designs to me are the worst part of the design because the enemy KNOWS they provide a function. BTW, what show is the Enterprise J from?
Like what? Disclaimer: I'm working under the following assumptions: a) they are sticking with the standard disk & nacelles design in some form, b) the nacelles need to be significantly separated from the rest of the ship, for reasons previously postulated elsewhere, c) they're not going to do anything to make a Federation ship look like a Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Ferengi, etc... ship. Given those considerations, the only other vulnerable spot that immediately pops to mind is the bridge, which is place where it is for esthetic purposes for the viewer.
In my book, all of them have their charms except for the NX-01 and -B. Enterprise was bad in every way. The. End. I really like the Excelsior and what they did to the design was just one more insult in that godawful abortion of a movie. Edit: Meh. I can take or leave the -J.
The NX-01 wasn't a horrible ship. Just a horrible ship to be a precursor to the Horizon class and the original NCC-1701. I mean, I buy that they needed a kewl looking ship for the series and if the series hadn't sucked bloody donkey balls, people would have given them the benefit of the doubt--the way people understand Klingon forehead ridges from the 1970s on.
Blue glowy deflector dish. Blue glowy nacelles. Presumably, the deflector dish serves a purpose -- y'know, deflecting particulates that, at sublight speeds, could drill holes through the ship and kill everyone on board. You knock that thing out, that ship could go to warp, but it'd be a death sentence. And then of course, shooting the shit out of the blue glowy part of the nacelles means the ship isn't going to warp -- at best -- and at worst could blow up the whole ship, since Galaxy class ships, for one, tend to get destroyed when the nacelles are even damaged. Compare that to the TOS Connies or TMP-era Mirandas that could have their nacelles chewed to hell or blown off entirely and survive.
Isn't that the JJPrise? Looks like the JJPrise to me. After all, it's got two nacelles and a saucer. That's how the JJPrise is the Enterprise, after all. So that's the JJPrise, too.
My reflex reaction is of course the D (I used to have to keep constantly reminding myself that this squat-looking thing was way bigger than Kirk's ships), but I cannot in honesty count out that J . . . Further angles do not help. I'm willing to call this a tie . . . this time. [edit]I should add that I'm not a big fan of the "Lookit me I'm an ARROWHEAD!!!" aesthetic, either, but it just keeps popping up and I'm willing to let it go. I've always kinda liked the Excelsior class. It's ugly from some angles, but great from others -- and it fulfills its main goal, which is to look like something that can go really fast.
(Sung to the tune of "my funny Valentine") This ugly Enterprise Sweet comic Enterprise You make me smile with my heart Your looks are laughable Unphotographable Yet you're my favourite work of art
I wonder if it's not a latent reflection of the strong negative feelings many have towards the series overall ? (and no, that doesn't explain my disgust with the "D" because I despise the series "Voyager" but I think the ship is fairly nice looking - not great but not hideous.
You mean the USS Inverted Space Spoon? I actually like the -D. She's my favorite behind the Refit/-A.
I voted for the J, 'cause it's just weird... but the NX-01 refit makes me wonder: At what point, when you've completely reworked the structure of half the ship, does it cease to be a "refit"?
I can live with all of them except the -J. Looks too "futuristic for the sake of looking futuristic" compared to the rest.
This kind of "poll" is somewhat misleading. The NX-01 Refit and the Ringship never even appeared onscreen. The Enterprise-J only appeared very briefly in an indistinct background shot. The Enterprise B and C only appeared in one movie and one episode respectively. So naturally, peoples opinions about them are skewed. NX-01 was the main setting for a series that many fans believe was the "last straw/nail in the coffin" for television Star Trek so that probably influences opinions considerably.
Wow, I'm honestly shocked that for all the bashing it's gotten in the various TNG movie posts that the E only has two votes.
It's not the worst is all. Kind of like the ring ship. Nobody would want to see it, but we've been subjected to worse.
The Enterprise-E normally gets a lot of credit because it replaced the much, disliked Enterprise-D for the movies. I didn't like the Enterprise-D for a couple of seasons, but eventually it grew on me. And no other Enterprise to me has had that "aircraft carrier look" (I'm a bigger ship than anything else in the Fed fleet).
Why aren't we voting on this Enterprise? http://employees.csbsju.edu/rsorensen/modelcitizen/trekships/galaxy/future-2.jpg It got more screen time than half the Enterprise's in the poll.
