I never hated the -D, but I guess for the movies, the interior used in the show wouldn't work for the lighting they were going for in the films.
Personally, I would prefer a new Enterprise along these lines (if no one likes my design). http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs32/f/2008/229/d/6/Discovery_Class_Blue_to_Color_by_madeinjapan1988.jpg or this http://www.well-of-souls.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=824
On a side note: I never minded the NX-01...it seemed like a good, simple design for the first warp-5-capable Earth starship. And the NX-01 Refit is a nice bridge between the NX-01 and the Constitution class.
I didn't say that. Blue glowy things make great mood lighting. I'm just saying that if the excuse for the ships getting flatter is to eliminate visible things for enemies to target, that same reasoning -- and it's good reasoning -- should also see all the neon get covered up.
For shits and giggles, I wanna see a ship ALL made of transparent aluminum, and with neon every-fucking-where they can put it. Make it look like an 80's telephone.
I guess then at least they wouldn't know what to shoot at. As it is, it's in all the spots where if anything at all gets through the shields, the whole ship go boom. Guess how long the 1701-A would have lasted against Chang if the nacelles had been lit up like Budweiser signs begging him to target them.
Ent-E was a nice design IMO. Looked pretty and badass at the same time. And I loved the name of the class - Sovereign. Not a ship you want to mess with.
Isn't the XCV-330 actually the most scientifically accurate? I'm not saying that due to its Vulcan look, as all Vulcans are computers, like Spock's father But IIRC seeing or reading somewhere that very design/idea for genuinely scientifically speculated interstellar ships. And it WASN'T a Trek thing &/or production. Ironic being it's so damn ugly imo.
Yep, centrifugal gravity is something with real life analogs. A sandwich of flat stacked decks with synthetic graviton creation? Not so much.
now THAT is the aircraft-carrier-look That one reminds me of... anyone besides me remember this? 'twas said to be pretty much a direct rip-off of the TOS Enterprise
Of course they are. Cars are already unsafe, should we advise people to plow into brick walls at top speed? Why enhance liabilities instead of mitigate them?
There's that. But there's also this: Versus this: Maybe the not-lit-up-like-a-honky-tonk ships were actually structurally tougher, partially by virtue of not having all the neon exposed.
The F looks like something Anne Summers sells to boldly go where women wish men could find And what's with the fucking Eye of Sauron deflector dish? The J looks like a posh pizza serving plate. Fucking FIAT in space, bet the things breaks down more often Darth Wong's mum.
You know, adding a letter after the registration to denote a more advanced ship is bloody stupid and annoying. Stop it already! We don't need to see 154 versions of the fucking USS Enterprise for crying out loud.
Well,if you knew anything about Star Trek you'd know that it was one of the few ships to use the lettering scheme, and the in-universe reasoning behind that was because the number had been made iconic by Kirk and crew, thus the subsequent versions were a tribute. All other ships in the franchise that share the same name usually had a new registry number. But I'm sure you knew that already, or otherwise you'll huff and puff and say "huuuuuurrrrrghhhhh, I don't care about Star Trek anymore".
I kinda like the NX-01. It isn't real pretty, but it's okay and it looks fragile. There were really two ways to take the design: either bloated like an ENIAC with the promise of improved technology shrinking the volume needed in the future, or fragile and sort of rough-draft. They took the second choice and I think it worked out well. Still haven't decided between the D and the J. The D has those ridiculous nacelle struts, the J has a very dubious rib under its saucer, and both suffer from very bad proportions. It's kind of a wash for me, really.
Exactly. That's what I like about the nacelle change on the refit -- it makes it look as though they armored them, in a sense.
