So far the FB page is mainly for us to keep in touch when the WF server craps the bed.

The only time FB drama carried over here was when Tex posted Sokar's pic on the board. Aside from that, the place is a ghost town unless the board shits itself.

For as much as we talk about social media cutting into BBSes, it is really hard to get the same experience on Facebook. Maybe if you created a separate persona and used that for your shenanigans in their own feed, but if you try to make the WF group function like WF, it just doesn't work.

True. Most of us are a bit more reserved on FB, less tempted to give somebody a hard time about something. I don't think it's because we are using our real names, so much as it's just a different environment. Conversations on Facebook are a bit like conversations in the church parking lot. Conversations at Wordforge are more like time spent at a dive bar after a few drinks. In both, you are among friends, but the type and tone of conversation is very different.

Yeah, that's the issue about WF. So much was said while anonymous (and while younger) that most would want a clean slate before attaching their name to it.

However with that clean slate I wouldn't have problem. On most most social media these days I use my name anyway.

Nope! I like the fact that, even though some of us know each other on Facebook, there is still a certain level of anonymity here. If this place ever links to Facebook like Anc was wanting, you can kiss my ass goodbye.

Be my guest. I guarantee a 100% success rate. I used to comment some on a local news site until they linked Facebook. I never comment on any sites that do that.

As much as would be lost there is an argument to be made that we are shackled by our past. Arguments that we've all had before become trips into the past digging up what ever minutia we can to play gotcha on some petty subject or another.

Cortez scuttled his ships to insure that his men went forward into the Aztec empire, perhaps we need such a motivation. :bergman:

I tend not to do so for the same reason. However, most sites have another option that allows for anonymous registration. I usually say fuck it to that, too, as it's a pain in the ass. But what if there was a site with its own user registry, one we're both already registered at, and that does not know we are also facebook users? Is there harm in a guy who is a facebook user being able to post, while you and I continue to post as the same asshole users we've been for ten years?

Nope! I would want no part of it. Some link to Yahoo. I have a Yahoo account to divert spam to. I don't post on those either. What happens on Wrodforge stays on Wrodforge. I come here to get away from Facebook. If I want a post to show up there, I'll post it there.

Maybe you could describe a bit more of what you think would happen, so that I can understand it a bit better. Because if I understood Ancalagon's suggestion (foggy at this point, many months later), I'm not clear on how anything the user named Muad Dib did at Wordforge would ever show up on Facebook in any way that associates with whatever your name is there. If we run you off, I want it to be for the right reason, not just because you think something is happening that isn't. ;)

Impossible. Whatever actually happens, he'll blame it on some paranoid ideation that "WF is run by libruls and I'm a victim!"

Facebook, Yahoo, etc do data mining. Anything linked to them gets data mined. We get enough of shit without linking WF to it.

Maybe somebody with better technical knowledge can weigh in, but I'm pretty sure google is already data mining the shit out of wordforge. I don't think facebook registrants derive that even higher.

This place is a "fig leaf," like Green Arrow's mask. Or Clark Kent's glasses. I'm confident that anyone who wanted to spend an afternoon could figure out who I am from clues I've dropped here--without knowing me on Facebook. But a hiring manager isn't going to find this place by Googling the name at the top of my resume. And if someone did put 2 & 2 together and questioned me about this place, I could point out that Volpone is just an aspect of my persona and this place allows me to try out debating styles and views that I wouldn't necessarily make IRL.

For example, I wouldn't dream of calling someone a pedophile IRL just because I didn't agree with them--that just isn't done. But because of the almost decade of history of it, it and Nazis being the only bannable offenses of the early days, and the subsequent lifting to accommodate polarslam and his kiddie fiddling proclivities, in this "culture" it is an understood shorthand for "I disagree with you and don't feel like talking any more."

Because you are another cowardly bullshitter among many.

I talk to people in real life exactly as I do here. If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, it's fucking chickenshit to say it anywhere else. And you don't get to disown all the heinous crap you spout by associating it with an "internet persona." Everything you say and do contributes to who you are, regardless of where it is said or done.

You are correct, not just Google, but other search engines as well. For a time, something like half of all guests viewing the site were from the Chinese search engine Baidu. I nixed that pretty quick though since a site like this would never fly behind the great firewall of China, so no sense taking up our server resources.
