No. Anonymity in writing is one of our nations proudest traditions. There is a time and a place for it, including subversive pamphlets and bbs's.

I would walk away, just on principle. All a BBS-level website needs to know about me is that I'm old enough to tick the Terms And Conditions box. In the event that, say, a sports website insists that it's Special and Precious enough to require my name . . . well, I just use a pseudonym. If it wants to kick me off for that, so be it.

    Really?

How do you explain 58 members of the Wordforge Facebook page where 98% of them are using their real names?

You might not use your real name on here, but you're far from anonymous. Pretty much anyone, including you, can be easily tracked down with a few minutes of googling.

Do you have any idea how many members have openly shared their names and locations? I don't keep notes but I can recall several members real names.

No, I haven't another style, or face.

I admit I am not. No attempts at deception I simply haven't the skill to communicate via the written word. It's one of the reasons I participate on Wordforge, I'm trying to develop the skill that seemingly comes so naturally to many other members.

In real life feedback comes in an entirely different flavor.

So, just to be clear: There's a Facebook page?

Where 58 people have registered under their Real Life names. No pseudonyms, no online personae, but the names they use on their own Facebook pages? Yanno, those pages where they post photos of their families and talk about the things that are really important to them. And despite the antics on WF, they allow folks like Flashlight access to that kind of information?

    Really?

Many of those Facebook Wordforgers don't seem to have any other friends but Wordforge people.

There was a law in South Korea where messageboard users had to register accounts with their national ID numbers. Koreans have a poor taste for slander (as per their Confucian ideal of saving face), which in their legal system applies even if the claims are true. They want to hold people accountable.

Obviously this is an affront to democratic free speech, and groups on their Left are pushing to repeal the law, if it hasn't been already.

Kind of eliminates the mega-paranoid "YOU JUST WANT MY ID SO YOU CAN TAKE MY GUNZ!!1!" mob from the get-go.

Not sure I like the idea, given the entree for identity theft, but it sure would change the tenor of the conversation.

It's a "secret group" and doesn't come up on a Google search. You have to know about it and ask one of us to join.

Also, any pictures and shit taken from there and posted here is against the rules and would be punished accordingly.

And the conversations had there so far...the tenor is not much different than here.

Some folks still use handles, but most don't and it seems to make little difference.

Yes, there is such a page. There are a few obvious pseudonyms, but the vast majority use their real Facebook account. As for what they can see, that depends whether you are friends with them, and to what extent you have established security policies on your page. Membership in the group does not change a person's access to other group members, although it does inform other members that you're one of the crazies who posts here. If you are interested in joining, contact Bear.

About what I expected. So the only difference is, unlike the RR, it's hidden from public view. Kind of an adjunct to the BR, then.

    Okay, that answers my question.

As for joining, thanks, no. Can't see why I'd want to give the Usual Suspects any more access to the people who are important to me than they already have.

And not entirely sure why there's a need to sustain WF if everybody can just shift over to FB.

The Facebook page, generally speaking, isn't used. I don't think people want it to take the place of the real thing. Here's a fairly typical excerpt from a recent discussion:

No, but my name is shared with a high school shooting victim, so I'm so far under the radar on Google search results that I no longer have anything to worry about.

Releasing my books may as well have been me saying "I am Iron Man", up at the podium in front of the entire press corps.
