I wanted to stop at Dunkin' Donuts this morning on my way to work and pick up a dozen for the coworkers, since it's my birthday. My choices are the DD on Rt 20 in Paterson, NJ, or the one in my own home town, suburban Franklin Lakes. I opted for Franklin Lakes, hoping to avoid the almost-certain language barrier I'd encounter in Paterson. Intolerant as it may sound, sometimes I just don't want to deal with it, and Franklin Lakes is a wealthy NJ suburb full of rich white people. I assumed I'd be dealing with one of their vapid blonde teenage daughters in her first attempt at responsibility. There was a young Latina at the counter. I asked for a dozen assorted, with at least one Jelly. She said "Ju want yelly?" I guess I had that coming.
This is why it was frustrating delivering to construction sites, unless you could find a foreman or contractor you couldn't find someone who spoke a lick of english. Even if they could speak it they would pretend not to understand so that they could ignore you.
What's the deal with people bringing in cakes when it's their birthday? Everyone does it in my office and my previous firm. Personally, I prefer to keep my birthday secret and not do anything. In fact I'm planning on being aborad this time around.
I have never been at work on my birthday, ive always had the day off. Helps when your bday is Dec 20 though....
^ I used to be like that as mine falls during the school half term. I don't think I celebrated a birthday at school or work until I was 21.
