I see plenty of wilderness alongside those roads.

I expect Route 3 in Clifton, on the way to the Lincoln Tunnel, to look like that one morning.

If you think this is bad, wait until we have nine day long waits in the bread lines.

When this will happen, I do not know. There are simply too many of us on this planet. At this rate, Mother Earth can't sustain us forever.

I realize I'm responding to something said in jest. I cannot, however, resist. How long
do you think you can you survive eating things you grow in your toilet?

    I'm sure I don't know.

I would actually try 5-gallon buckets and grow lamps before I'd resort to plumbing fixtures, and probably be more into tomatoes and corn than spinach. I need my turlet.

We have the technology right now to feed everyone on the planet - and continue to feed everyone on the planet twice over.

We don't because we live in a society that is based on "he who dies with the most, wins".

Or filled at least partially with people who don't care much for the idea of working for someone else's survival. Not when they look all around and see people living with unnecessary luxuries, procreating irresponsibly, making stupid decisions that fuck them over for life and then expecting society to bail them out. Sure, that competitive materialism is a factor, but they're not hurting anyone if they're spending their own money, and I say it's reasonable and natural to resent being made to support someone who exhibits less self-discipline than you impose on yourself.

People only behave that way because that the way they've been "trained" to behave - not just by their parents or caregivers, but by society.

If we allowed ourselves to evolve past a money-based society, we could live in a world much like Roddenbury's, where everyone contributed to society in a way that suited them without having to worry about making more money.

You know what's the best job I ever had? working at McDonalds. I loved it. But, the pay sucked and I needed to pay bills.

Lots of people actually like cleaning - sick, I know, but they're out there.

If our society could move beyond viewing one's income as a measure of their value, more people would be doing those jobs that most people think would not be taken care of in a society based on ... Roddenbury's views.

It doesn't matter to me if they were trained by the phonics monkey. Choices have consequences.

Remove profit motive by eliminating scarcity and the need to labor to produce needed goods. Antimatter reactors and replicators, basically. That is the threshhold. Nothing that falls one molecule short of that will suffice.

I found it to be homocidal rage-inducing, myself. But then again I was 18 at the time.

Roddenberry had magical plot devices at his disposal.

It certainly won't happen overnight. But, we won't ever get there if we don't start today or even someday.

Every journey begins with the first step.

Well, it suits me to sit around and do nothing. Putter around the house, fuck off on the Internet, maybe do some fix-it projects, go to the beach, read...

How we going to build an economy on that? :marathon:

One big, positive step would be reducing the world's population by about 80%.

Suddenly, everyone is needed for an important, high-paying job.

    So, chop chop.
