I'll take students objecting to a visiting lecturer over republican dominated legislators literally passing laws to gag the educators who work there lest they say something "controversial" (i.e. something that contradicts their own worldview)

Nor is she extreme in any objective sense of the term. Choose pretty much any source you like that rates and compares political parties worldwide and the Dems, from Manchin to Sanders and all points in between, are perfectly ordinary moderate-to-center left, while the Republicans - the mainstream of the GOP, notwithstanding your occasional Kenzinger, is WAY out on the right with the sort of political parties that are rightly understood to be outright fascists in their home country. If you are in THAT neighborhood and you look across to AOC, of course she seems extreme - because your perspective is skewed.

But the things she advocates for are almost entirely a matter of longstanding practice in multiple other countries that no one at all would describe as socialist hellholes. So whence comes the notion of extremism? it comes only because our whole political scale is tilted sharply to the right.

It's not just that. I would even go so far as to say that you are confusing cause and effect: our whole political scale is tilted so sharply to the right, because of the way social programs are perceived.

It's an ingrained, conditioned reflex. In the minds of too many Americans, anything "social" automatically and necessarily implies "socialism" in the full Marxist sense of the word (state control of everthing, no private ownership, no super-rich people allowed...). No rational thought goes into it. Americans are like Pavlov's dogs where "socialism" is concerned. They simply can't bring themselves to admit that countries that have social programs are much more successful, with a much higher standard of living and a much greater life expectancy, than the US. I don't actually have much room to criticize them. I had to live in Europe for quite a few years before I realized that the European approach to socialized capitalism (it isn't true "socialism" at all) produces much better results than the American approch. It was a conditioned reflex for me, too.

It is really dying out. The boomers are up to the plate and they are so much better than their parents. For all the kids complain about the boomers they never really knew what raised them. It was fucking horrible. As gen X I saw the WW2 generation, and they were not the greatest generation. Not even close. I met the korean war and WW2 generations and good riddance to bad rubbish. The boomers are falling, and gen X was brought up with black influence. However, we still have this regressive time bubble in the heartland who was clinging onto the greatest generation like they were actually great. The greatest generation got their and then got angry at all their kids, and the boomers are caught in the middle. This all is going to change more rapidly because we are going to see more and more things now that cameras are everywhere.
