For the first time, I just can't finish this book because it's just so bad.

I always have to have a book to read during my lunch hour. The only problem is that here in Memphis there isn't much of a market for books because hardly any one here can read, so bookstores are rare, there are none close to where I work. So when lunch time comes, and I have no book to read, I just go to Wal-Mart or Krogers and roll the dice with the crap that they sell. Sometimes I find a good one...like I didn't even know "Eldest" was out until I saw it at Wally World....but the last time, I rolled snake eyes.

The name of this book is "Event" by David Lynn Golemon. It started out filled to the brim with worn out cliches like super secret, omnipotent organizations, an ex special forces protagonist, and flying saucers. The writing started out bad and just got worse. Finally, on page 146, I just couldn't go on anymore. It's during a space monster's attack on a bunch of bikers camped out in the desert. During the attack...

"His brain continued to function even as he was squeezed like a tube of toothpaste and his entrails forced out upon the ground..."

    and

"It was like a child drawing a large circle with a stick and was scratching faster and faster, digging a deeper trench with every rotation."

And finally...the place where I could go no further...

"The blond girl started screaming the screams only professionals made in the movies."

    Ugh! :yuck:

So right about now, I'm thinking, "Who the fuck is this guy?" and look at the back. and David Lynn Golemon's two sentence bio starts with, "...served in the U.S military (classified)."

Holy Shit! :soma: This guy was so uber secret, even the branch of the military he served in is classified!

That's some Secret Squirrel shit right there!

At any rate, if anybody wants a half read book free, just let me know and I'll pay to ship it to you. :techman:

It's hard to imagine such crap being published. I'm sorry you wasted so many pages on it.

I haven't touched Worlds of Deep Space Nine:Endor in months because I just can't get through Heather Jarman's writing.

Garamet, will you please go help the child out.

You know what, I actually tossed the book in the garbage, but something about destroying/discarding books...no matter how unbelieveably bad they are...strikes me as wrong, so I pulled it back out.

Out of curiosity, I looked at Golemon's section on Amazon, and the presentation made the books sound interesting. I guess we are all slaves to PT Barnum.

 I only managed a few pages of The Da Vinci Code. But it's still sitting on the bookshelf, because I can't bear to discard books...

The first for me was "Cujo." Got horribley bored with the main character, didn't care about her, put the book down forever.

Lately, I've actually stopped in the middle of some David Weber books. The man needs to trim his narrative down by at least 50% to keep me awake.

Geez, they push out turds like that onto bookshelves, and I'll probably be submitting stuff all my life, never get published, and die horribly of something that could've been prevented if I'd had medical insurance.

    Allow me to reinterate-

Will it be worth not selling in order to not have to resort to pushing out easy selling crap?

    And you answered perfectly.

Seconded. The only books I'd save if my house caught fire. (Well, except my red-leather edition of LOTR.)

And to MAOHS: did I hear you right, you liked Eldest (or any of the Inheritance Trilogy? )

Oyyy. I find it encouraging in some ways that shite like that can get published. There's hope for everyone.

And the blurb about him being 'classified' is so painfully transparent as a marketing ploy that it makes my balls hurt.

I was going to get that... still thinking about it. Is it similar to LOTR or more like The Silmarillion?

Did you buy the deluxe edition with the Alan Lee illustrations? I almost want to get it just for those.

That would make alot of sense. Supposedly Rex Stout , when asked, refused to answer either way.

Along with that is a theory that Wolfe and Archie are Uncle/Nephew or cousins.

I got the standard edition, it has alan lee illustrations, but not as many as the deluxe edition.
As for the book, it's not as light hearted or easy to read as LOTR or the hobbit, it's certainly more 'grown up' but its not such a brain-addling mess as the Silm can be for those not used to it.The first chapter is difficult, full of history and explanation and names, but once you get past that its a fantastic self-contained story. It is rather grim, after all its about a family enduring the devils (morgoths) curse and everything that goes wrong for them. But its a great story that gives you some insight into the history of middle earth, set 6000 years before LOTR

Never heard the Holmes/Adler one before, can't see how you can shoehorn Montenegro in with that. And since Archie tells us several times that he's from Ohio, and we know he got his job at the brownstone on West 35th street by saving Nero's life once, the nephew thing doesn't work for me either. But they do bicker like an old married couple sometimes! I think Archie threatens to quit every other story or so.

I do remember in The Black Mountain, Nero has Archie pose as his son while the two of them are in Montenegro looking for the murderer of Marko Vukic and Carla.:clyde:

I only saw the movie, and when looking for information on it stumbled across a website that ripped the books to shreds. I don't want to ruin it for you if you really enjoy them, but after what I read I don't think I could read it with an open mind. I kinda wish I hadn't so I could have read it without prejudice.
