Energy prices are on the rise, food prices are shooting up, the housing market is in the toilet, consumer confidence is headed downward, inflation looks like it may be spiking up, and I'm betting that unemployment will probably start ticking up soon. What do you folks think of our current economic situation? Are we fucked? Any chance for a reach around? I'm thinking we're headed for a stagflation situation like the one we had back in the 70s.
Energy prices have consistently been on the rise for the better part of this decade. The great thing about food prices is that once they get too high, people starve to death and demand drops. I know that sounds horrible, but you have to look at these things realistically. Also, as ethanol is found to be economically infeasible for vehicles, they'll drop. Housing market has not hit bottom yet, I find the CCI to be a useless determinant of the economy's direction, inflation is spiking both here and abroad, and unemployment is already up. I find its far easier to be a pessimist than an optimist. Keep in mind that every bad situation has a potential flipside for profit. Yes, we're in for a bad downturn, the US economy kept pushing off recessions by lowering interest rates and spending with money we didn't have, and those chickens have come home to roost. However, is it the end of America? No. Are we fucked? No. Will we see stagflation? Maybe.
What was the old Ferengi saying? "War is good for business, Peace is good for business." I think the same can apply here; a bull economy is good for business, a bear economy is good for business. People will find ways to adapt. Maybe food prices will grow higher. Then plant a garden if it's so profitable.
You fucking kidding me?! Yeah, they went up slowly. You probably just started driving. And I bet you don't pay to heat your home or have just started.
I've been driving for 4 years and have been living on my own for a year and a half. However, just because I wasn't paying those bills before doesn't mean I don't know how to look at a graph. So, what's your point? Are you disputing that energy prices have not consistently been on the rise for the better part of this decade?
We'll just drown our troubles in Disco Fever, same as last time. It's overdue for a comeback anyways.
Probably just kinda screwed for a bit. The market will adjust itself. But not if the government keeps messing around where they shouldn't.
I happened to think it's just a glitch. But after observing and reading up a bit I think we are in for a very rough ride. Once the poor in the western countries start starving - and we're well on the way - we will be in a world of hurt.
KC and the Sunshine Band are still touring. But there are only two surviving Bee Gees. R.I.P. Maurice
Bad form to neg rep someone as a mere retaliatory gesture. I suspect I hit a nerve. Were you not asked and did you not tell?
Neither. I just think you're a douchebag and wanted to respond in kind. It's also bad form to complain about getting negrepped. Attend to the plank in thine own eye before attending to the mote in mine.
Hmmm.....note to self......start planting coca. Plan B...... get Government to pay me not to harvest it.
I'll take a neg rep if you happen to disagree with a post. However, you seeking me out for the specific purpose to get back at me makes you a pussy. Don't bitch at me for calling you on it. You sure you served? I've never known any enlisted men to be such crybabies. No need to quote Gnostic Jesus to me either. It doesn't apply here.
Well as for food prices, if the wacko's were not demanding more ethanol and bio fuel, the price would be much lower, but you know them, save the planet, kill the people. Not that bio fuels are saving anything.
I'm not real optimistic about the future. And I'm hoping things don't worsen. Food prices have shot up quite a bit recently.
OK. You know what? I almost hoped Gore would win in 2000. Because I was seeing signs that whoever wound up winning was going to take the fall for the economic slowdown that was coming at the end of the Clinton era. The .Com Boom, ushered in when George Bush opened up the Internet to commerce, had pretty much gone bust. Oil prices were inching upwards. The Dow was showing signs of cooling off. By January 2001 we were in a recession. But even with a fairly major war and no relief on oil prices, Bush managed to keep the economy chugging along for eight years. And y'all claim he has a double-digit IQ. If a moron can keep things moving along, I'm not too concerned for our future*. *As long as Obama isn't elected. Swear to God, if anyone can bring back the glory of the Carter years, it's Barack O.
Which, thanks to high petroleum prices, will be outrageously expensive! Well, it's KC and *maybe* one of the original girl singer/dancers. Everyone else is new and/or too young to have been in the original band. (I shot their show here a couple of summers ago).
