    Overrated. The Eris is better.

    Maybe.

The Incredible 2 should beat them both. :bailey:

The Incredible 2 is quite a ways off, AFAIK. The Nexus 2 should be quite a phone though.

Or was it the Droid 2 I was thinking about...

Not sure, but it was rumored HTC and Motorola would both release competitors to the new iPhone when it came out.

Android 2.2 will really blow the top off. The specs already are astonishing. I think Google's I/O is tomorrow. Should be interesting what they talk about.

I have neither the money or desire to drop $500+ on a phone every six months. After some very early hiccups (due to my computer, not the phone), I've been quite pleased with my iPhone 3GS and when it's time to upgrade, as of this moment, I plan to stay with the iPhone.

    Thats true as well.

Here in Canada two new carriers are coming out. Wind Mobile and Moblicity. Both offer unlimited plans with no contracts. Pay by the month and if you want out, you just stop paying.

Moblicity is offering an unlimited everything plan. Unlimited minutes, unlimited long distance US and Canada, unlimited data, unlimited text messages, all the calling features, but the downside is you have to pay the full price for the phone. Something like $600 a shot.

^^^ Averaged out over the length of time that you HAVE the thing compared to the lower rates you pay for all that unlimited stuff, it probably still shakes out to be about the same price.

T-Mobile offers a similar plan. I considered it very seriously when I was leaving Sprint. But, their data network sucks in the southeastern United States. Their 3G coverage is spotty at best. When AT&T has better 3G coverage than you do, well, that's just sad.

Not for the plans around here. Its impossible to get unlimited data, or calling. You pay through the nose for a high amount of each if you go with Telus/Rogers/Bell. The big 3 as they call it.

If I want 5gigs of internet with Telus who has the best service around here I have to pay something like $120/month. And then to add the calling features is another 15 bucks, and for 1000 min of cell time, not including long distance I probably would have to pay another $120/month. So suddenly my phone bill is up at $250/month and I don't even have long distance US calling.

    Its crazy.

With the Moblicity plan I can get a Blackberry Bold 9700 for $500, and then go for the unlimited everything for $65/month. Comes out to around $1280/year. With Telus it would cost me with the same phone around $3200/year.

I have to pay $199 anyways to get a Droid on Telus.

Yeah, thats the problem I have here too.

    Great prices, but no service.

Telus has HSPA+ coverage in my area, and I regularly get 4mbps internet speed on my phone.

Until Wind Mobile and Mobilicity come up with that kind of coverage.

Seriously how so? Eris has a less capable camera, less memory, old OS, and is no longer supported. What am I missing here?

What phone do you have O2C?

If you have an Android phone, go into the Market and search for LauncherPro Beta.

It makes your phone a million times faster. Screen response time is awesome.

I installed it last night and its been amazing.

Best app in the market IMO.

^ iPhone 3G. But I work at a place where we get to play with just about every mobile device under the sun, so I have some basis for comparison.

I'm going to have to get that for my girl friend's Motorola Droid. My iPhone is way more responsive and much faster currently. I'd be interested to see if this improves her phone enough to keep up.

I can give you the 1st and 2nd points based on metrics. Keep in mind that the 1st point is important in the eye of the beholder. For me I like the fact that the screen is bigger on the Incredible. Im a screen whore. For the 3rd point I would agree in a kinda-sorta manner based on what is being reported out there (i.e. sometimes the scree response suffers if both hands arent on the device). But that can also be a subjective complaint as well. OTOH (IIRC) the screen is brighter and clearer than on the Eris. The 4th point is entirely subjective though. Oh and I am a BB Storm2 user so I've no skin in this game.

So what do you think? Worth the upgrade?

I'm thinking about getting this, but I'm kinda iffy about AT&T doing away with the unlimited data plans.

You could easily run over if you're not careful about the bytes you're transferring...

Obviously if they set it too low, it will be a problem, and they'll anger customers and lose business - especially with the android in place.

So what are they setting the cap at?

If I was in the market for an iPhone today, yes, I'd wait until the 24th. I do want one. I like the new features (namely, support for a bluetooth keyboard). But, I've only had my 3GS for six months and, quite frankly, it's not worth dropping $300 on right now since OS 4 will work on my phone. I'll wait see if they have any Christmas specials and get one then.

I'm not going to lie to you. That bothers me. But, the most mobile bandwidth I've ever used in one month was 500MB.

What I can't seem to find out is if this is going to change the contracts that are already in effect. One would think they couldn't change the contract without my consent, but you never know.

    200MB for $15 per months.
    2GB for $25 per month.
You can purchase an extra GB for $10 per month.

I still have my 3G. I will be pre-ordering this puppy of the 15th, been waiting for it.

As for the data plan, the new limited only plans are for new customers. As long as you have an iPhone unlimited plan now, you can keep it even when you renew your contract.

Will the video calling feature work between different phone models or is it locked to only working between iPhones? Every phone I have used since 2003 has supported video calling and has worked between any 2 phones used on the same phone network. The description on Apples site seems to suggest it is only iPhone to iPhone, which would be quite disappointing.

It's only iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over wifi. If you have an iPhone 4 and we share a wifi connection, you can't talk to me because I have an iPhone 3GS.

So basically they have their own version of video skype and are acting like it is some amazing new thing.

I really like the iPhone hardware, would just be nice if it used more standards.

I could be reading it wrong, but I'm thinking you have to be on the same wifi network. If so, personally, I think it's damned stupid. On a good day, wifi has a range of, what? 150 feet?

I'm sure it's a WiFi-based VOIP (video/voice over IP) method, otherwise you're right, it makes no sense at all.

Also, the front camera is likely going to be a developer API, so even though Apple's native app may not support things like Skype or connecting to other phones with video calling, someone will be along with an app that does that.

Apple just starts out small, with things they know will work, then either builds from there or lets others figure that stuff out. Also, FaceTime (the video calling framework) is open, so I heard, so it can be used by developers to build apps on Android or whatever to enable wider usability.

I've got a 3g at the moment, and I'll think I'll be upgrading. I checked and they're offering me the $199/$299 plus $18 upgrade fee deal. I took a peak on eBay and saw plenty of used iPhones going for more than $200, so once I've got my new one activated, I'll just sell my current one to offset the cost of the new model. People are willing to pay a premium on used phones since they don't have to sign a 2 year contract!

Nobody seems to be mentioning the 720p video capture. That was the dealmaker for me.

No, you just each have to be on *a* WiFi network, not the same one.

From what I've read at theiphoneblog.com, Apple's "facetime" application is open source, which is unusual for Apple. Anyone can utilize it. Skype or even Android. The question is will they. So yes, initially, it will be iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only, but hopefully, others will adopt it or Apple will adopt someone elses platform to make the technology useful.

As for me, I'll probably pick this one up around September or so for the wife and myself. I have a 3GS and the wife and son both have 3G's. I can give my son the 3GS and sell the 3G's on craigslists to help offset the cost.

That was my plan, but a crack has appeared in it after 2 years fine service :(

Doesn't effect it working, but it racks the price down a bit so I'll pass it the girlf as her Tocco is shite piped onto a cake of fail.
