Not likely given that if he ever said something really subversive they would take away his internet access and eat his dog.
Considering how expensive it is to house someone in a SuperMax prison, if this guy is in there, it is for some really serious shit, whether we know all the details or not.
I was misremembering an article I read. SCOTUS hasn't made a ruling that prolonged solitary confinement should be banned, just that it was cruel and unusual punishment akin to "the rack, thumbscrews, the wheel..." So that's why we still see prolonged solitary in prisons and it's not stopped. We're one of the few Western countries where it's OK, though, apparently. The case itself, Chambers v. Florida, was primarily about coerced confessions. The Court overturned the defendant's conviction because his confession was compelled and made under duress, and they thus determined it was inadmissible in court. From Wikipedia: "It marked one of the first times that the court had accepted the contention that treatment short of physical violence should result in the suppression of evidence." Decision from Chambers v. Florida
Oh cry me a fucking river. This dumb fuck used his SIPRNET access and went hog fucking wild. Not only going into areas that he had no need to, but recording that data and then turning it over to a non authorized entity. IOW he is guilty of Espionage. As such he faces two types of penalties when convicted: the death penalty or a life of hard labor with out chance of parole. He is not being tortured. Except for the pillow its the same pretrial confinement that any prisoner accused of some major crime would receive. Don't believe me, check out your local county jail. This is military justice. He is a suicide risk and a traitor. Like the accused child molester who is put in solitary to keep him safe from the other prisoners during his pretrial period, a traitor is looked upon in the same light in the military. Solitary is as much for his protection so they are insuring his presence and safety. Again, Pretrial solitary is not cruel or unusual punishment. He is being forced to take his meds the same as someone in the civilian court system can be compelled to take their medications. He is also granted his one hour of exercise like anyone (civilian or military) would be under similar circumstances. This aint torture, its pretrial confinement.
At some point (due in no small part to prisoners having nothing better to do), we've allowed prisoners the ability to dictate how they are going to live. We seem to forget that people in prison, especially nowadays, are not nice people.
I read it again and it's actually kind of hilarious. That's a good thing for him. Apparently he gets visitors, so it ain't exactly the silent treatment. You've got to be kidding me. He can't sleep during the day? So. What. Then you get this quote: Followed by this quote: Get the fuck outta here. Poor Bradley only gets one book to read at a time. Someone call Amnesty International (someone did, too). And check out this gem (emphasis on the bold): No shit? So are we complaining about this or complimenting the government for their obvious concern over his welfare? Let's sum up: Little Bradley has access to entertainment, visitors, and exercise equipment. He is kept safe from other prisoners who would unquestionably do him harm. And this is torture. This is 90% manufactured outrage and Rick gobbled it up like a stripper on a cocaine coated cock. I hope a bunch of idiots take to the streets over this and fight for Bradley's right to have more than one book at time or take naps during the day. If they are successful, they may get him out of solitary and in the general population where everyone will be really nice to him all the time.
Being in solitary is tough. But, that's one of the things that happens when you get caught doing something wrong. The two border patrol agents who were convicted a few years for shooting an illegal alien in the ass (literally), they were kept in solitary as well because their lives were in jeopardy being in the general population, some of those being people they had caught and were sentenced to time in the joint.
He needs to quit the bitching and enjoy the fact he isn't taking it in the ass... ...oh wait, that may be what he's angling for.
In jail we can not force an inmate to take their meds. It's one of the annoying aspects of the job dealing with psychs. (unless we have a order from a judge but that is super rare) However under certain circumstances the doctor can order a shot and we can and do use force if necessary to hold an inmate down to get that shot. It's only done for those who come up to the floor and are completely out of control. Now in prison? You don't take meds they will explain to what happens when you don't take them and when you refuse again they make you take them.
As an espionage suspect, his ability to communicate with the outside world is both restricted and closely monitored.
Another strawman. I have not said, implied or even hinted that "everyone else is good". Issues concerning the US obviously arise more often because of the demographics of the board.
Feel free to make us aware of anyone that has been killed because of these leaks. And feel free to make an argument for concealing from the public the many crimes they revealed.
If you're going to wilfully distort what the article actually says, as you are, and ignore it when the distortion is pointed out to you, then I suggest that you can't be taken seriously on this issue either.
The really cynical side of me thinks they actually do want Manning released to the general population. A dead martyr (even one killed by other prisoners) gives them a lot more mileage than a pitiful traitor being treated mercifully by a fair and open justice system.
Those people who disagree with what wikileaks are doing are complete fucking idiots. The truth can only be a good thing,..... bring it on,... we need more of it. Every government, every organisation and every industry and business need this treatment. The 'behind closed doors' bullshit of a select few incompetents has got to come to light. Thank god for the information age.
Numbnuts, this aint about wikileaks. Its about the bastard that gave the data to wikileaks. Manning is guilty of espionage.
And I hope a 1000 people around the world in similar positions do exactly the same thing as this guy. The truth needs to come out.
If their governments are that paranoid and terrified of people knowing the truth about how they do what they do then maybe that is what is required.
Yes, yes. Little people all over the world need to betray their oaths and their countries in the name of my principles...
Lets face it, if this was a Russian (or chinese or whatever) who had leaked secrets of the Russian government and intelligence services you guys would be hailling him as a hero. It doesnt seem like this guys actions are necessarily wrong but who he did them to that makes certain people so angry and revengeful. You guys are on 'the side' of the American team and this guy went against that team so you want blood. If he had leaked Iranian secrets you'd think it was wonderful
Let's face it, though. If this was a Russian or an Iranian, you'd be calling for his head on a pike. Heaven knows, you aren't as aggressive in going after those who betray those countries. I'll be the first to admit it if I have to be. He broke our laws and potentially hurt us. That does make it wrong and of course I'm going to be upset about it. All of a sudden you want absolute truth and absolute good and evil? Now that there's funny. I don't care who you are! edit - Oh, and it does sound like you only wanted those 1,000 to be anti-American.
Really? Please inform yourself better. Wikileaks has been leaking data from all sorts of different sources, including other governments from all over the world, among them Iran and Russia. It's all very admirable. Information published by Wikileaks.
I think that's true. I also think it's sad as hell that you don't understand the difference between the American government and the Iranian and Russian governments. Fuck, even the Chinese. Our dirty laundry gets more air - we've got a free press. The US government does go the secrecy route to much IMO, and I'd like to see that change. Most often that's because we do have a free press, and it isn't that the government is doing something wicked as it is the people in question are covering their own asses. Wikileaks IS going to get someone killed. It's only a matter of time. Maybe that's worth it, maybe it isn't, but there are definitely some things that should remain secret because it threatens people's lives with direct violence. For those that missed it the first time: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...ade-the-world-more-repressive/article1818157/
No, like really, no. Dont be stupid. Id love to see everyones secrets out, including the UK's. In fact I would bet we have some particularly nasty shit we are keeping hidden.
Im am not making that distinction simply because I wanted EVERYONES dirty laundry out in the open. No exceptions. I dont think one country should be able to keep their secrets because I like them more....
