Your rep powers are weak, old man.

yes, but my persistence is unwavering.

Remember I carried on a jihad against Trekbbs everyday for 8 years. And 7 of those years were after I figured out I couldn't win.

I vowed to drive Sardy off Trollkingdom and it might have taken several years, but he finally screamed my name and ran for the hills never to be seen again.

Don't underestimate my power to never stop. People who use the term 'pyrrhic victory' fail to realize that revenge is its own reward.

I think he meant to choose wisely because if you pick someone he likes, he will just neg you into the red. If you're in the red, your reps will no longer count.

Well to be fair, rep wars do actually interfere with functionality of the board for the targets.

Most people here use the reputation feature to leave comments on posts they agree with that they don't feel merit a whole new post of their own. By spamming up someones rep feed with page after page of neg reps it makes it a lot harder to read those genuine comments.

If the system was starting from scratch, my personal preference would be to keep the reputation system, but remove neg reps from it. That way people who want to give each other a higher score are still able to engage in their silly games, while everyone else can carry on largely as usual.

Knowing the character of some members here though, it's easy to imagine that a change like that would just result in massive results of OMG DRAMA, so from a practical point of view I would say just leave things as they are.

You do know the real point of the rep system is to "agree" and "disagree" with what is posted.

If someone disagrees with the statement, a neg is how the system is meant to be used.

I think Lanz for a certain amount of time up to his choosing should put Kirk and Sokar et tal full red. Just to see the reaction. :corn:

And, if that principle is applied to the rep threads and complaining that you don't like, it yields: "Suck it up. Life isn't fair. You aren't entitled to people not doing things you don't like."

Which comes down to saying they have every right to make a fuss about the things they don't like. Just like you.

But by admitting in public that such activity actively annoys you ("I'm getting sick of it"), you are giving them all a very good way of getting back at you for you doing things they don't like. Is that really what you want to do?

Posted this in one of the other threads already:

I've changed my mind. Get rid of rep completely.

I'm tired of the bitching from both sides.

No shit. I would never have guessed that - especially if the entire idea of agreeing and disagreeing started with this board.

Don't be stupid. You know damn well many posters here do not use it for that purpose.

If you want to use it to "divide" this community the way it has, just change the "agree" and "disagree" to "Left" and "Right" and give both a "+1".

Because that's really the only reason some people use it.

"Many Posters" = maybe 5-10 out of a couple hundred.

Now some want everything to be changed because of a couple people, sure being asses...but asses in the Red Room, when clearly the majority doesn't want it changed or doesn't care.

It kind of reeks of TBBS making special rules to handle Enterpriser.

And of course the same people complaining won't do the many things they could on their own....turn off rep, stay out of the Red Room, put jerks on ignore and how about not fucking care if some people turn your pips red and don't agree with you. There is nothing of any importance that having red pips interferes with and if you hate the color...hide it from view.

But no. 5 childish people annoy you so let's overhaul everything. I dunno...seems silly.

Ah! I had another brilliant idea!

You get so many rep points to give out a day right? Well, what if you could chose how many points you were going to give out to a single comment? Just want to give out one point so you can leave a bunch of comments? OK! Someone say something so stupid that you want to give your entire day's points to a single comment? Ok, do it!

Volpone came up with that idea or something similar several years ago.

He called it the "rep bomb".

Not possible with the current program.

We could make all rep worth 10 points each for example, but it would be all of them.

Hey Lanz...we should make the Admin reps worth 10 since we have to behave so much. :D

Sample bias. 'The majority of people who still post here, like things the way they are.' It should be noted that almost just as many would like it changed or don't care either way. If Lanz is tired of it, wants a change, of just wants to fuck with someone he should change it.

Not having points attached to rep won't change the function or usability of board one iota. It will once and for all get rid of the childishness attached to it.

I've seen extended rep displays...and they are seriously ugly eyesores.

What bias? I voted I don't care and I mean it.

Interesting you are advocating Lanzman doing something if the motivation is fucking with someone when normally you are one of those people who seems to be against that kind of bullshit. :wtf:

I think there may be a way to do that now, at least for Vb 4. One can assign, on a post by post basis, a certain number of reputation points. See here (helps if you have a Vb.org log-in and can see the graphic):

    http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=251044

For the longest time when Vb4 was first introduced, it was not possible to move to a later version of Vb without losing rep altogether!! It seem now though the Vb community is developing Reputation mods for the latest Vbulletin.

Who knows, maybe we will even see a move to Vb4 and its additional features??? I do think Vb4 has some additional video capabilities, as well as integration with other platforms, that are interesting.

And yet you are defending the status quo with your statements.

It's not meant as an attack on you, quite the opposite in fact. Parallax was insinuating nefariousness motivations and I was just pointing out that it was simply inherent human psychology.

I have long thought the point based rep system needed to be gotten rid of. If it pisses off some assholes, all the better.

What about creating a membergroup for those "only +1" advocating members where they are only allowed to give beneficial rep?

As for those who want both beneficial and punitive rep, they could remain in the "both functions" membergroup, as they have been all along......and those who want only +1 rep can request to be put in the beneficial rep membergroup?

This way, we can give members a choice in which group to participate?....

I admit, my preference is to not get rid of it entirely...it's far too useful for quick comments.

But when it comes to points and rep wars and shit...I personally don't care. It seems so far the majority wants it left alone, even if you attribute all the I don't cares to the non-point based group, together they still are less than leave it alone.

Yes, it's childishness, but because of the rules it's childishness that can only be done in the Red and Gray Rooms and because of the nature of those rooms why should we care if people are being assholes with rep there? It's just another form of trolling, which is allowed.

See the bit of an issue here? Why should complaining about rep war in the hot rooms merit special attention when no other form of trolling is stopped there?

It's how it's meant to be used, but that's not how most people here who regularly use neg reps actually use it.

You can see right here in this thread:

The thing is, your fellow posters aren't children and they aren't going to be cowed like small children by virtual 'punishments'. They're just going to feel all the more self-affirmed the more you neg them. So the idea that neg reps discourage behavior you don't want on your board doesn't hold water. Neg reps just give a tool to those puerile-minded posters who take glee in what they think of as 'punishing' each other, and that's not best for a group of adults.

Human psychology? Perhaps for a third grader.

It was fun when I first joined - it was a game. But, it's been two years and now when I open the page and see new rep points, my first thought is "oh look, someone hates me." It's a pleasant surprise when it's not.

But, the people who continue this - 6 years later ...

I'd say leave the rep alone as it stands, but if you have to change it, I'd say to give the newbies a chance to get their feet wet before they get gang-banged with negs.

Apparently not. Rep is such a terrible thing for some people that they leave the board over it, or otherwise feel really, really sad about it. :ohnoes:

I don't think of it that way at all, not sure where you got that from.

I think of it as "I agree" or "I disagree" and in my case, I have to disagree strongly to use a neg at all.

It has nothing to do with behavior modification, just my opinion.

Not really no. Want to stop verbal (postal?) trolling and you enter into editing posts and content, which as a message board is the heart of the medium.

Want to stop Rep BS, you turn off points based Rep. That's it. The functionality of the board is in no way altered.

Absolutely agree. I think also in general people could just take a deep breath and move on about rep, and it really should not be the be-all and end-all, to the extent that it drives people off, of one's interaction on here....

But some people do seem to be advocating for a +1 rep system (something which, as you point out correctly, they can do on their own) so my suggestion was to satisfy that request.... where these members who are advocating for such can put themselves in a "+1 rep only" system.

Hyperbole. It is one of many factors leading to the suck, for most it's only indirectly. As point based rep serves no purpose, get rid of it. Seriously, why not? When's the last time shit changed around here? Has the stagnation been improving things?

    Yuck.

    Not applicable.

This would bring on one enormous shitstorm.

    See above.

    N/A.

This has never been a problem.

    Sounds complex and hacky.

This could be useful for UserCP-breaking offenders.

Oh geezus that's a recipe for a shitstorm.
Fugly as all hell. I mean really, really bad.
    Is this really an issue?
    Awards for what?
There's only one feature on there that'd be unequivocally useful. The rest, meh at best.
