If I were elected Regent of WF, I would return us to 10 rep points per day, ABCA. Rep would remain "flat" though (your reps wouldn't have more power if you had higher rep). I would also institute ads and then use the proceeds to buy the person with the highest rep an XBox. I would force the person with the lowest rep to buy ME an XBox on pain of banning.
Jenee, the rep system has been used for varying purposes by different members almost since the day this board started. For those who would like to claim that members have been run off because rep, I'd be curious to know specifically who these people are that were run off because of rep.
Y'know what this is about? It's a bout one group of posters, who don't like the way a second group of posters is using their rep. i.e. rep butthurt. So they are trying to get the admins to change it so they can go "ha-ha" to the first group of posters. That pretty much sums up the whole thing, right there. It's been admitted several times already.
What? All this shit started because Lanz bumped Rick Deckerd's rep and the other group got all butthurt.
Its more of a logical fallacy than a bias. We say the rep system is fine because most of the people here don't mind it, but that doesn't take into account people who may have left or may leave in the future because of the rep system.
I'm also beginning to like Ramen's idea better each day. Every year, reset everyone to 0 rep. It could also add another catagory to the Forgies each year, that of the biggest rep whore.
Which is pretty much what Rickie Prickardo did following Lanzman's participation in rep war earlier this week.
Lanzman, violated his own board rules and policies when he did that. Additionally, who are the people that have started threads on this topic and who has been the most vocal about it Jenee. Why don't you take a look.
Uh huh, that's what I expected from you Jenee, you truly are too much of a feeble minded, follower to really be able to do much of anything else.
Well, I don't know if I can technically claim those ideas as my own Face. But you're right, my sheer awesomeness must be responsible for them somehow. Face does bring up a good point, how many of the worlds good ideas were created simply from my presence in the universe. Obviously my very being has sparked creative in others, for if God can create me then surely the lesser among you can find the ability to put together something of value in the universe. Can I take credit for those small lesser ideas? No, well I could, but they are beneath me. No, I must continue to serve as inspiration to all of humanity. I must serve as the beacon of light to the lesser people. I am hope.
Since you asked, I'll tell you. I'm a participating member, around more than once a week to stir shit, and have a personal interest in the others here who also participate. Yep, back in the early days I was hammered pretty good by some "bullies". I even had a repwhine thread and found out right then and there that the best option was not to be an asshat and never, ever, start a repwhine thread unless I wanted three times the number of pings. I don't play this bullshit persona game, I'm pretty much like this irl right down to the profanity laced comments. I try to discuss things, have a little fun, maybe learn something, all without the expense of trying to get a "gotcha" out of it. Do I get a laugh at others expense? Whenever I can but I try to keep it jovial and not directly agitative. Usually the recipient has more or less alrteady pwned him or herself anyway. So, how is it broken? All I see from my seat is a handfull of instigators getting their what's for. There's some really stupid shit thrown out here that actually deserves to get pinged. I've never been much for sending someone to the stoneage. That's just juvenile, but if someone is consistantly an asshat, sure. Take Dayton for instance. It took him a long fucking time to recover from his full red badge but he did it. Poor Baba just keeps getting hammered, but that in itself shows a defeat of the negging parties. If Baba doesn't care hell I get a laugh out of it. I dunno, maybe if they weren't shat upon at every turn of the card they might just be less likely to get their kicks this way. Command decision? I have news for you and anyone else that feels this way, get over it or get the fuck out. Simple, cut, and dried. If you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. There are numerous other forums here that won't allow any shenannnigans, feel free to participate there if getting pinged for stupidity makes one all butthurt. I hope he leaves it the fuck alone like the majority of the board says. Look, I'm all for the old every loss from WF deminishes us but really, come on. You once were an interesting opponent on any number of subjects, but somewhere along the line you went all Darth Vader on us and the appeal to debate went right down the crapper. As of late it's not any points of interest but more like points of agitation. I get enough of that shit in real life so yea, I just can't be arsed to participate in any discussions when your only motive is to be the bigger bully. You asked.
My opinion as someone who is not really part of the community, and there for some what of a third party observer is: If rep wars are obtrusive enough to be a problem then set both positive and negative rep to zero. That way you can still agree or disagree with individual posts but you won't have people neg-bombing people or negging their posts just to bring down their reputation. That being said, I don't see the problem with just leaving it alone. Rep wars seem to be inherent to wordforge's culture. Take away or alter the rep system and people will just find another way to war with each other.
I might agree with this if we had some way of knowing a newbie really was a newbie. When they are often duals or TK visitors, being created or coming here simply in order to make 50 inane posts and then participate in rep war, it is often useful to take away their ability to do so before they get to that point. Do you have any good solutions for knowing who is who? I will also add that the reason I "might" agree rather than "would" agree is that I wonder how long it should be before someone can be repped. Or should newbies have an advantage in being able to be posrepped and have it count, but not negrepped? In any case, it is abundantly obvious that negreps are not simply a calm way of saying "I disagree." Anyone who claims that is being extremely naive, IMO. (Sorry, Tamar.) There is a very good reason for which I disagree with a lot of people on a lot of things, and say so, but never negrep anyone. A neg rep is clearly a "jab" that is intended to hurt the person, and not just a neutral way of expressing disagreement. Anyone remember when dkehler first came, and negrepped people all over everywhere? People ganged up on him and took away his ability to negrep, and he was widely seen as a very agressive and disruptive person. But in fact he wasn't at all; he's one of the nicest posters on the board. (It's a shame he doesn't post much any more, in fact--You there, Dave?) When he realized that a negrep is not interpreted as a simple disagreement, he stopped doing it that way, and soon had a very positive rep score again.
I disagree! Actually, hats off to your rare to never neg rep. It is a jab. I have been known to use them on occasion but usually it has to be something pretty stupid, ignorant, or blatently racist like this.
That's a good point, and something I hadn't considered before. Taking away the points from rep could actually increase the functionality of it. Right now most people use pos rep just to signal 'I agree with this statement', but due to not wanting to look like they are attacking a person refrain from using neg rep to do the opposite, to say 'I disagree with this statement'.
Actually, more than one of them are, when you consider that several of the ones complaining the loudest are doing so, not because of a rep war, but because Lanz messed with them by setting Rick's score so high for a little while. I find all their repwhine comments very, very amusing, considering that they as a group have pretty much decreed arbitrarily that anyone who whines about rep automatically "loses" simply for doing so.
etc... Believe me, there have been times when I really was tempted to negrep someone who really, really deserved it. But for the same reason I never use profanity and never flame people, I don't neg them even then.
That's the thing. They have been around since this place started. Even the original owner seemed to participate in them.
Kirk is right in this and shame on some of you for pulling out the rules to try and show him wrong because the rule that admins/owner don't play rep war is a "house" rule and isn't written down. It's always been said admins don't participate in Rep War because of the unlimited rep they have and the ability to alter someones rep at the drop of a hat. It angers many people when admins start fucking around with rep. This argument has come up before when an admin messed with someones rep. Lanz would have been smarter to just ignore the whole stupid thread that RickRetard started. Instead because of his dislike of Sokar he fucked with the system.
Saying that admins can't participate in rep wars would imply that they actually matter. If admins and mods can participate in rep wars then it gives repwars legitimacy and there for just perpetuates the problem. If the problem with admins/mods participating in repwars is that they have unlimited rep, then set it so they don't.
